POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is the primary contact for patients seeking medical services and needing financial assistance. Insurance eligibility, verification and pre-certifications are completed for patients who will be admitted to the hospital, scheduled for outpatient surgery or requires outpatient diagnostic testing. The Financial Counselor will discuss the patient’s financial responsibilities and qualifications for financial assistance and coverage by third party payers. Assists with registering patients when needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Primary contact for patients seeking medical services financial assistance.
2. Reviews daily Inpatient, ER, Surgery, and Outpatient admissions and discharges with a focus on uninsured, under insured and credit risk patients.
3. Responsible for insurance eligibility determinations, precertification of insurance coverage and providing patient liability estimates.
4. Financially clears patients, even at hospital bedside or OP registration to obtain payments or to discuss any other financial assistance programs.
5. Coordinates with COC regarding patient status changes; whether this would include patient type or insurance notifications or coverage.
6. Prepares patient liability estimates and collects upfront payments for elective or scheduled procedures or sets up payment arrangements.
7. Advises uninsured patients of governmental programs such as Medicaid and assist them with qualification if applicable.
8. Counsels patients and provides explanations and guidance for estimates, charges and patient liability to assist with any financial concerns.
9. Discuss outstanding balances with patients attempting to receive future services, and make an attempt to collect older debt.
10. Create detailed notes in the system to reflect all actions performed on an account.
11. Assist with registering patients when needed.
12. Maintain complete records of all patients applying for Charity Care. Follow up on any pending applications and notify patient of application status in timely manner.
13. Serve as a communications person within the department and hospital regarding patient’s financial liability.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
HS diploma or GED required; Associates Degree or Bachelor’s Degree a plus
Qualification Requirements:
- 2 years of experience in hospital registration, billing or coding or financial counseling required
- Medical terminology knowledge preferred
- Intermediate experience with MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook required
- Knowledge of CPT/ICD-9 and ICD-10 is a plus
- Knowledge of medical insurances (Medicare, Medicaid, Commercial Insurance, and Managed Care), EMTALA regulations, admitting and billing processes required
- Computer knowledge of the admission and collection systems.
- Experience working with in CPSI and RCM is a plus
