Role Description

The Gallery Assistant & Art Handler is a part-time, on-site position located in Old Lyme, CT. This role supports daily gallery operations, including greeting visitors, answering questions, and providing basic information about exhibitions and events. Responsibilities include assisting with the safe handling, installation, and de-installation of artwork; preparing galleries for shows; and maintaining clean, orderly exhibition spaces and storage areas. The role also involves basic administrative tasks such as processing sales, managing visitor sign-in, answering phone and email inquiries, and helping coordinate classes, workshops, and events. The Gallery Assistant & Art Handler works closely with staff and artists to ensure professional presentation of artwork and a welcoming experience for visitors.

Qualifications

- Art handling and installation skills, including safe lifting, mounting, and packing of artworks, and attention to detail in presentation.

- Gallery operations and customer service skills, such as welcoming visitors, answering questions, and supporting exhibition and event logistics.

- Administrative and organizational skills, including basic computer literacy, accurate record-keeping, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a busy environment.

- Communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with staff, artists, and volunteers and to interact professionally with the public.

- Interest in visual arts and familiarity with gallery or museum settings; prior experience in a gallery, museum, or arts organization is preferred.

- Ability to stand for extended periods, move and handle artwork safely, and occasionally lift moderate weights with appropriate care.

- Reliable availability for part-time, on-site work in Old Lyme, CT, including some weekends or evenings as needed for exhibitions and events.

Position starts at $20 per hour. Hours include every Tuesday from 10-5 to start and installation weeks (approximately every 6 weeks). Additional hours may be considered in the future.

Pay: From $20.00 per hour
