Job Responsibilities
The General Maintenance Tech II serves as a crew member in a variety of cemetery operations and maintenance activities, including the safe operation of equipment utilized in cemetery operations, such as utility vehicles, riding lawn mowers, tractors, compact tractors, spreaders, forklifts, pressure washers, augers, and excavators. Assists with the grave excavation and squaring using pneumatic equipment, picks, and shovels, and assists in the lifting and placement of caskets onto lowering devices during interment operations.
Responsibilities of the General Maintenance Tech II:
- Burial operations are conducted within the standards set forth by the NCA Operational Standards and Measures. As a member of a 2-to-3-person team, will ensure the Grave-site Layout Plan is followed, inspects, verifies gravesite location. Plans and directs team to prepare gravesites for daily interments. Is the primary excavator operator. Verifies and signs Decedent Chain of Custody. Trains new workers in the proper performance of interments.
- Headstones, grave markers, and niche cover operations: Inspecting and storing headstone and niche covers, installing headstone and niche covers, ensuring headstones and niche covers are visible and legible, ensuring headstones and niche covers do not show evidence of debris or objectionable accumulations.
- Grounds Maintenance: Understands and follows Grounds Maintenance Plan and maintain visually prominent areas such as turf, trees, shrubs, and planting beds.
- Facilities Maintenance: Ensuring office, restroom, maintenance pad, break room, and locker room are clean and orderly.
- Equipment and Tools: Ensuring cemetery equipment and vehicles present a clean and neat appearance, performing equipment preventative maintenance before, during, and after inspections, performing tool maintenance, and maintaining fuel dispensing logs.
- Safety: Safety Hazards, open graves, personal protective equipment, and safety training.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
Minimum Requirements:
- Knowledge of landscaping and grounds maintenance, and experience in the safe operation and maintenance of lawn and garden equipment.
- Ability to follow instructions and effectively communicate orally and in writing with fellow workers and supervisor(s).
- Ability to assign and monitor task completion of fellow Building/Grounds personnel assigned.

Additional Requirements:
- Knowledge of how to properly carry out grounds-keeping, mechanical maintenance, housekeeping, and custodial duties.
- Knowledge of safety practices relevant to the area of employment.
- Skill in safely operating mechanical equipment (such as mini excavators, dumpers, and industrial trucks) and hand tools related to those used in landscaping, gardening, opening, and closing grave sites, custodial cleaning supplies and equipment.
- Ability to read and understand a measuring tape/ruler.
- Ability to drive a state vehicle and perform routine driver duties.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and during emergency situations.
- Ability to stoop, bend, and lift 60 lbs.
- Ability to work in various weather environments associated with the cemetery location.
