Job Title: Convention General Manager

Location: Niagara Region, Ontario (Hybrid; On-site presence required during event)
Type: Contract (Base + Commission)
Compensation: $40,000–$70,000 (commensurate with experience)

About OFVC

The Ontario Fruit & Vegetable Convention is a premier annual event that brings together growers, researchers, and industry leaders from across Canada and beyond. Featuring a dynamic trade show, expert-led sessions, and networking opportunities, OFVC plays a vital role in advancing the horticulture industry. The convention is organized by a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors and operates as a not-for-profit organization.

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly organized and proactive Convention General Manager to lead the planning and execution of OFVC. This role involves managing budgets, coordinating logistics, and collaborating with volunteer committees, exhibitors, sponsors, service providers, and attendees. Strong communication and leadership skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in event or convention planning and management
  • Strong financial management skills (budgets, proposals, contracts)
  • Excellent organizational and time-management abilities
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience managing volunteers and committees
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace, and strong understanding of digital communication tools an asset (social media, Adobe, Canva, Photoshop)
  • Familiarity with the agricultural or horticultural sector is an asset
  • Ability to work flexible hours during peak periods and attend the event

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the General Manager will:

Event Management

  • Oversee third-party contractors (registration, AV, staffing, venue)
  • Coordinate logistics with the Niagara Falls Convention Centre and service providers
  • Manage communications with exhibitors, sponsors, committees, and attendees
  • Assist with marketing and promotional efforts
  • Prepare and maintain a yearly Critical Path document for board review
  • Schedule and facilitate meetings; prepare agendas and minutes

Trade Show Management

  • Lead exhibitor logistics, booth sales, and floor planning with volunteer support
  • Maintain exhibitor databases and communications
  • Prepare exhibitor materials and respond to inquiries
  • Coordinate onsite setup and move-in/move-out

Sponsorship Management

  • Maintain sponsorship records and databases
  • Develop sponsorship programs and promotional materials
  • Manage contracts, invoicing, and payment tracking
  • Identify and cultivate new sponsor leads

Registration Management

  • Oversee attendee registration (online and onsite)
  • Generate reports and handle inquiries
  • Coordinate with registration providers for technical setup and badge creation
  • Manage onsite registration logistics and staffing
