About the role

Geriatricians at Eastern Health play a critical role in the delivery of essential healthcare across many interfaces including in the emergency department, acute wards, sub-acute wards, outpatient clinics, community-based services and care at home programs. We support care of patients at many sites including Peter James Centre, Wantirna Health, Angliss, Maroondah, Box Hill, Healesville and Yarra Ranges Health, as well as in many community settings through Transition Care Program, Residential InReach, GEM at home and many outpatient programs.

We are seeking to recruit to both permanent and fixed-term roles to provide clinician expertise and leadership for a number of clinical services at Eastern Health including Acute Care of the Older Person (ACOP), Geriatrician in the Emergency Department (GEDI), Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM).

In addition to these roles, we are also seeking to appoint to Internal Locum roles for providing cover for both planned leave within geriatrician roles, as well as opportunity to provide support for covering of unplanned leave.

You will be joining a group of friendly and committed Geriatricians, supporting the growth and development of services across acute, sub-acute, ambulatory and community settings. Geriatricians at Eastern Health additionally support the training of a number of Advanced Trainees in Geriatric Medicine, as well as many Basic Physician, GP/General and Intern trainees. There is a strong ethos towards supporting teaching and learning for trainees and with peers, as well as a commitment to promoting and participating in quality improvement activities across the organisation.

About you

To be successful in this role you:

  • Must be a registered medical practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia
  • Must have specialist training in Geriatric Medicine.
  • Must hold a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP), or hold equivalent qualifications to enable recognition as a specialist in Geriatric Medicine.
  • Must be recognised by Medicare as a specialist in Geriatric Medicine.
  • Must demonstrate compliance with CPD requirements for relevant specialist College
  • Must hold current Medical Indemnity Insurance
  • Must be capable of providing comprehensive geriatric assessment and management across a wide range of clinical settings, including in-patient, outpatient, ambulatory and community settings.
  • Can demonstrate a patient-focused approach in service provision with genuine empathy and excellent interpersonal and communication skills across all psychosocial groups
  • Are a strong team player, willingness to supervise doctors in training and work cooperatively with nursing and allied health staff
  • Will undertake all duties in a diligent manner, with honesty and integrity
  • May have a record of a strong commitment toward teaching as well as research practices and principles.
  • May demonstrate additional expertise and capability within specific acute geriatric care settings (eg Acute Care of the Older Person (ACOP), orthogeriatrics) or sub-specialist ambulatory services (eg Continence, CDAMS).
  • Are willing to work within both hospital and community-based settings. Possession of a current driver’s licence and willingness to perform patient assessments in the home environment as needed is desired. Alternative means for transportation/participation in community work can be considered and accommodated for those who may be unable to travel due to health reasons.

Healthcare workers are strongly recommended to follow COVID vaccination recommendations provided in the Australian Immunisation handbook (based on ATAGI advice). Seasonal vaccination against influenza is a mandatory requirement of this role and an offer is conditional on this being up to date prior to employment.
