GI Lab Aide Gastro-Intestinal (GI) Physiologist


Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Physiologist in a full range of GI Diagnostic Tests including High Resolution, Oesophageal and Ano-Rectal Manometry, 24 hour pH monitoring, and Capsule Endoscopy.
  • Carrying out full range of Hydrogen breath tests.
  • Assessing and taking of patient history.
  • Assisting in the preparation of patient results in accordance with professional standards and departmental policies.
  • Seek the advice of relevant personnel when appropriate/ as required.
  • Be aware of medication and know it's possible effects on the test to be carried out, and instruct patients on discontinuing the appropriate medications prior to investigation (if applicable).
  • Daily maintenance and disinfection of equipment.
  • Be aware of general procedures and best-practice guidelines.
  • Maintain throughout the hospital an awareness of the primacy of the patient in relation to all hospital activities.
  • Report directly to the Chief GI Physiologist.
  • Daily duties of the unit including appointments and record keeping.
  • Ensure accurate patient records and departmental statistics are kept, using computerised systems as appropriate, and have these statistics and records available as required.


Academic/Professional Qualifications and/or relevant Experience:


Required:

  • Must have passed the Leaving Certificate Honours Biology or equivalent science subject/exam.
  • Must possess a relevant 3rd level scientific qualification (Level 8) in the area of Biological Sciences, as confirmed by the Irish Institute of Clinical Measurement Science (IICMS).
  • Must be able to demonstrate the clinical capacity and administrative capacity associated with the role.
  • Must be willing to participate in mandatory academic training programmes and successfully complete an advanced practical programme of study.


Desirable:

  • BSc in Clinical Measurement (or currently studying for the BSc), from Dublin University of Technology or equivalent as confirmed by the Irish Institute of Clinical Measurement Science (IICMS), OR Hold a Certificate in Medical Physics and Physiological Measurement (prior 2001) from Dublin Institute of Technology (or equivalent) as confirmed by the IICMS.
  • Previous experience working in a healthcare/ hospital setting.
