Job Description

Your Team:

The Invesco Legal Team in Hyderabad provides comprehensive legal services for our global organization in partnership with attorney teams in other regions and specialized legal services in support of our Hyderabad office. We leverage our extensive legal expertise, technology, and collaborative principles to deliver impactful solutions and insights.

Your Role:

  • We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Head of Legal, India Entity to lead our global legal team based in Hyderabad. This role is responsible for (i) all legal matters arising out of Invesco (India) Private Limited (IIPL) and acting as a trusted advisor and partner, and (ii) providing local leadership and representation of a team of legal professionals in Hyderabad, most of whom have a matrixed reporting line to functional managers in the United States.
  • In addition to providing leadership and strategic legal support, the role requires a hands‑on, day‑to‑day advisory role for IIPL, including routine employment law matters, commercial contracts, and corporate secretarial and statutory compliance activities. The role is expected to provide ongoing BAU legal support, with the ability to independently manage routine matters and appropriately escalate complex, novel, or high‑risk issues.
  • The Head of Legal, India Entity will work closely with the leaders of the Hyderabad office as they support Invesco’s strategy and global priorities. Equally, the Head of Legal, India Entity will work to ensure alignment with functional managers on strategic initiatives and operational excellence. While the Head of Legal, India Entity provides leadership and legal expertise, functional managers handle the strategic direction of the team, the allocation of team resources and the day-to-day management of tasks such as training, prioritizing work, and addressing skill gaps. It should be noted that this is not a traditional people-manager role given the team’s connection to their functional managers.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Strategy:

  • Provision of high‑quality, timely, and commercially focused legal advice to the Hyderabad management team, with significant hands‑on experience in Indian employment law, commercial contracting, and company secretarial matters alongside broader corporate, governance, and dispute‑related issues.

  • Partner closely with functional managers to ensure a consistent approach to goal setting, performance reviews, promotions, development discussions, and the annual talent review and compensation process.

  • Drive talent acquisition, development, and retention strategies in collaboration with the local HR team and functional managers.

  • Foster a culture of accountability and partnership to resolve issues, address action items, and ensure adherence to company policies.

  • Develop and maintain strong strategic partnerships and collaborate with leaders across all functions within India.

Functional Excellence:

  • Act as the primary point of contact for day‑to‑day legal queries under Indian law, providing practical, timely advice to business, HR, Finance, and Operations teams.

  • Provide hands‑on legal support across the employee lifecycle, including hiring, disciplinary actions, performance management, investigations, terminations, and interpretation and implementation of HR policies and local labor laws.

  • Draft, review, negotiate, and advise on routine and recurring commercial agreements governed by Indian law including vendor, consulting, IT, lease, confidentiality, and services agreements.

  • Perform and oversee company secretarial, governance, and statutory compliance activities for IIPL as a core BAU responsibility, including board and committee processes, statutory filings, maintenance of corporate records, and coordination with external advisors.

  • Ensure that day‑to‑day legal support is delivered in line with Indian regulatory requirements while remaining consistent with Invesco’s global legal and compliance standards.

  • Ensure productive relationships with regulators (where applicable), IIPL stakeholders and functional managers by demonstrating superior responsiveness, accountability and client service.

  • Coordinate with the Compliance department to ensure proper registrations with regulators and implementation and execution of policies and procedures.

  • Provide proactive situation-specific and India-specific legal advice on individual transactions, contracts and projects and on broader issues of policy.

  • Manage litigation matters, maintain MIS of pending litigations and follow up, coordinate with and instruct branch personnel and advocates of various jurisdictions in India relating to pending litigations, and ensure compliance with court orders.

  • Research, analyze, interpret and advise various internal teams such as investments, operations, finance, HR, etc. on new Indian laws and SEBI regulations.

Operational Excellence:

  • Collaborate with global stakeholders and functional managers to identify and implement opportunities for automation and innovation.

  • Monitor competition within the region to understand legal processes and technologies leveraged in the local marketplace.

People & Culture:

  • Participate in the IIPL Leadership team and play an active role in the evolution of the Hyderabad entity (Hyderabad Acceleration Program).

  • Represent the Legal team locally.

  • Foster a culture of collaboration and teamwork within the team and across all functional areas in Hyderabad.

  • Serve as an escalation point for local HR issues in partnership with functional teams.

  • Partner with the Hyderabad HR team and functional managers in talent management and training strategies, assist the functional managers to identify, retain and recruit top talent and take appropriate action for non-performance.

  • Maintain flexible work hours that align with local stakeholders, Legal dept colleagues and that overlap with functional managers. It is expected that your direct supervisor will be an attorney located in the United States.

The Experience You Bring:

  • Master’s degree in law.

  • Significant experience advising on Indian employment law, contracts, and corporate secretarial matters, including direct responsibility for day‑to‑day (BAU) legal support in a corporate or multinational environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently handle routine and recurring legal matters, while exercising sound judgement on escalation of complex, sensitive or high-risk issues.

  • 15+ years of experience in a legal role, with 5+ years in a leadership role.

  • Experience in a global organization with a matrix reporting structure.

  • Proven experience in legal functions, with a strong track record of leadership and strategic thinking.

  • Asset management/financial services and/or company secretarial experience within India.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a high degree of integrity, and the ability to build strong relationships with local teams.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to drive change and improvements.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage and advise on routine and recurring legal matters under Indian law, while appropriately escalating complex, novel, or high-risk issues.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices and emerging trends in legal functions.
