Job Description

Charter Medical Private Hospital (CMPH) is a 77-bed surgical hospital located on the outskirts of Mullingar with four operating theatres and an endoscopy unit. We provide a wide range of surgical care across multiple specialties and offer 24/7 Stepdown, Minor Injuries, and Rapid Access services in collaboration with the HSE.

We are currently recruiting for a Health Care Assistant (Outpatients / Chaperone) to join our team.

Role Summary

The Health Care Assistant (HCA) – Endoscopy is responsible for supporting the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care within the Endoscopy Unit under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and Clinical Nurse Manager.

The role involves assisting with the preparation, care, and recovery of patients undergoing endoscopic procedures, while ensuring patient comfort, dignity, and safety at all times. The HCA will support the smooth running of the Endoscopy Unit by assisting with clinical, environmental, and administrative duties in line with hospital policies, infection prevention standards, and best practice guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

1. Patient Care and Support

  • Assist in the preparation and care of patients before, during, and after endoscopic procedures
  • Support patients with activities of daily living, including hygiene, comfort, and mobility
  • Escort and chaperone patients to and from procedure rooms and other departments
  • Provide reassurance and support to patients, maintaining dignity, privacy, and respect at all times
  • Assist nursing staff in monitoring patient comfort and reporting any concerns promptly

2. Clinical Support

  • Assist nursing staff in preparing endoscopy rooms and equipment for procedures
  • Support with patient positioning and safe moving and handling practices
  • Assist with post-procedure care, including monitoring and comfort measures
  • Assist with Emergency First Aid as directed by clinical staff
  • Support safe and efficient patient flow within the unit

3. Infection Prevention and Control

  • Adhere strictly to hand hygiene and infection prevention and control policies
  • Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and hygienic clinical environment
  • Support cleaning of equipment, trolleys, and clinical areas in line with hospital guidelines
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times

4. Nutrition and Hydration

  • Provide support to patients with hydration and nutrition as appropriate post-procedure
  • Assist in monitoring and recording fluid intake as directed by nursing staff
  • Ensure dietary requirements are followed under the direction of the nursing team

5. Communication and Teamwork

  • Work under the supervision of the Registered Nurse and report all relevant information appropriately
  • Report any patient concerns, discomfort, or changes in condition to nursing staff promptly
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues to support safe and efficient patient care
  • Participate in handover processes and maintain clear communication within the team

6. Health and Safety

  • Maintain a safe working environment in line with Health and Safety legislation
  • Report all incidents, accidents, hazards, or faulty equipment promptly
  • Adhere to manual handling policies and safe work practices
  • Demonstrate flexibility in rostering and working hours in line with service needs

7. Administrative and General Duties

  • Assist with maintaining stock levels and ordering supplies as required
  • Support general organisation of the Endoscopy Unit, including preparation of patient areas
  • Maintain accurate records as required within the scope of the role
  • Attend mandatory training and participate in ongoing development

Essential Criteria

Knowledge/Experience

Each candidate must, at the latest date for receipt of completed applications for the post:

  • Leaving Certificate (or equivalent)
  • Healthcare FETAC Level 5 Qualification / QQI Major Award in Healthcare (essential)
  • Patient Care Support / Activities of Daily Living modules desirable
  • Previous experience in a healthcare or endoscopy/theatre setting desirable but not essential
  • Demonstrated communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic IT literacy and familiarity with electronic patient records desirable.
  • Commitment to maintaining patient dignity, confidentiality, and professional standards at all times.
