Historic Window Restoration Specialist
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled Historic Window Restoration Specialist with expertise in the preservation, repair, and restoration of historic wooden sash windows and frames. This specialized position requires a deep appreciation for architectural heritage, meticulous craftsmanship, and knowledge of traditional building techniques. The ideal candidate will combine carpentry skills with an understanding of historic preservation standards to restore windows in landmark buildings, historic homes, and heritage structures.

Key Responsibilities
Restoration and Repair:
· Assess condition of historic windows and develop restoration plans
· Carefully remove historic sash windows and frames while preserving original materials
· Repair or replicate wooden window components using traditional joinery techniques
· Restore original hardware including weights, pulleys, chains, and locks
· Consolidate and stabilize damaged wood using epoxies and traditional methods
· Strip, prepare, and refinish window surfaces using period-appropriate techniques
· Re-glaze windows using traditional putty or modern equivalents approved for historic work
Frame and Sash Work:
· Disassemble and document window assemblies for accurate restoration
· Rebuild or repair window frames, sills, jambs, and trim components
· Cut and fit new glass panes to match historic specifications
· Balance and adjust sash weights and counterweight systems
· Ensure proper operation of restored windows including smooth opening and closing
· Install or restore storm windows where appropriate for energy efficiency
Required Qualifications
Experience and Education:
· Minimum 2 years of finish carpentry or millwork experience
· Demonstrated experience with sash window repair and restoration
· High school diploma or equivalent; trade school training preferred
Technical Skills:
· Expert proficiency in traditional woodworking and joinery techniques
· Knowledge of historic window construction methods and materials
· Ability to replicate historic millwork profiles and details
· Understanding of wood species identification and selection
· Familiarity with period hardware and authentic replacement sources
· Competency with hand tools including chisels, planes, and saws
· Experience with specialized tools for window restoration
Physical and Safety Requirements:
· EPA Lead-Safe Certified Renovator credential (or willingness to obtain)
· Ability to lift and maneuver heavy window frames and sash (up to 75 pounds)
· Comfortable working at heights from scaffolding, man lifts and scissor lifts
· Ability to work in occupied historic buildings with minimal disruption
· Manual dexterity for detailed restoration work
· Valid driver's license with clean driving record
Preferred Qualifications
· 2+ years of historic restoration or preservation work preferred
· Training in historic preservation techniques and standards
· Knowledge of traditional glazing techniques and materials
· Familiarity with custom millwork and replication
· Bilingual communication skills (English/Spanish)
