BACKUS HERITAGE CA

Position: Historic Site Interpreter Posting No.: 103-26

Rate of Pay: $17.60 Hours of Work: 35 Hours/Week

Position Summary:
If you have a passion for interpretation, history and museums, then Backhouse Historic Site would be a great place for you to gain career focused skills and experience. The Long Point Region Conservation Authority is seeking two (2) Historic Site Interpreters at Backus Heritage Conservation Area. The successful candidate will be an energetic, creative individual who will provide information services and dynamic costumed interpretation of early life in Norfolk County in the Backhouse Historic Site.

The positions are pending funding by Young Canada Works (YCW)

Requirements:

  • Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada and be between the ages 16 and 30
  • Candidates should be currently enrolled full-time in high-school or in a post-secondary institution with a focus on education, history, public history, cultural resource management, museum studies, tourism or other related fields.
  • Successful candidates must be registered as a Young Canada Works (YCW) candidate prior to employment at www.young-canada-works.canada.ca.
  • Applicants must show a willingness to commit to fulfilling the work contract (length depends on when the successful applicant is available to start and funds available).
  • A negative Criminal Records and Judicial Matters check (CRJMC) for those 18 years of age or older

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working with the public
  • Prior experience leading and/or organizing tours, presentations, or recreation and educational programming
  • Excellent communication skills and interpretive abilities; must be comfortable with public speaking
  • Must be willing to wear a historical costume for an extended period of time in all weather conditions
  • Strong knowledge of, or willingness to develop, an understanding of 19th Century historical information
  • Strong interest in strengthening program development and interpretation skills
  • A drivers license and reliable vehicle is an asset

Responsibilities:

  • Provide excellent customer service
  • Assist with the planning, preparation and delivery of special events for the general public including demonstrations, tours, costumed presentations
  • Greet visitors upon arrival to Backhouse Historic Site, guide tours and answer questions
  • Perform and explain activities associated with the historical time frame of the Backhouse Historic Site (farming, domestic life, trades and leisure)
  • Communicate and interpret effectively various aspects of mid-19th century Ontario history within historical context of the Historic Site
  • Demonstrate personal development in the areas of program development, interpretation and cultural history
  • Maintain the cleanliness, maintenance and inventory of facilities and collections
  • Perform a variety of sanitary maintenance duties including the cleaning of program areas, equipment and public washroom facilities
  • Keep accurate record of all relevant statistics
  • Garden maintenance, as required
  • Evening and weekend work is required

Location/Working Conditions:

  • Backus Heritage Conservation Area, Port Rowan, ON
  • Varied shifts, must be available to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Outdoor and indoor working environment
  • Rural area – no public transportation
