The main purpose of this position

As a Housing Support Worker, you will play a vital role in creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive home environment for individuals living within Support House’s housing programs. Working onsite, you will provide compassionate, person-centered support to residents living with mental health and/or substance use challenges.

This role focuses on maintaining housing stability and wellness through harm reduction, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented approaches. You will engage residents in daily living, respond to crises, promote safety, and collaborate with internal and external partners to enhance wellbeing and belonging.

While this role primarily supports residents at the Maria Street site in Acton, it may also provide support at other Support House housing sites as needed to maintain consistent service coverage.

Responsibilities

Resident Support and Direct Care

  • Provide individualized, trauma-informed, and recovery-based support to residents within congregate housing settings.
  • Offer supportive counselling, crisis intervention, and de-escalation as needed.
  • Engage residents who use substances in respectful, nonjudgmental conversations about safer use, overdose prevention, and harm reduction strategies.
  • Provide and monitor harm reduction supplies and respond to overdoses using naloxone and emergency procedures when necessary.
  • Support residents with activities of daily living (e.g., cooking, cleaning, shopping, personal organization).
  • Conduct regular health, safety, and wellness checks in accordance with policies and individualized support plans.
  • Maintain safe, clean, and inclusive living environments.
  • Assist with resident onboarding, including orientation to house guidelines, tenancy agreements, and available supports.
  • Collaborate with healthcare and clinical professionals to support residents’ mental and physical health needs, including medication coordination and monitoring where appropriate.
  • Support residents in meeting tenancy expectations and sustaining housing stability.
  • Document all interactions, incidents, and relevant updates clearly and promptly in electronic case notes and reports.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality in accordance with organizational policy, PHIPA, and privacy legislation.

Teamwork, Collaboration, and Community Engagement

  • Work collaboratively with the Housing Supports team and other internal departments to ensure coordinated, person-directed care.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with community partners, service providers, and health professionals.
  • Participate actively in team meetings, supervision, and agency initiatives.
  • Contribute to program evaluation, data collection, and reporting as required.
  • Promote awareness and understanding of harm reduction, housing stability, and recovery-oriented practices across the organization and community.
  • Demonstrate cultural humility and sensitivity to diverse lived experiences, identities, and intersections.

Organizational Alignment and Administration

  • Uphold Support House’s values, Oath, and policies at all times.
  • Complete administrative tasks including timesheets, mileage, workload logs, and documentation accurately and on time.
  • Ensure confidentiality, ethical practice, and compliance with all organizational, funder, and legislative requirements.
  • Participate in quality improvement, service planning, and audit-related activities as directed.
  • Adhere to health and safety practices to maintain safe environments for residents and staff.

Professional Growth and Personal Wellness

  • Engage in continuous professional learning through supervision, training, and reflective practice.
  • Maintain awareness of personal wellness strategies and participate in organizational wellness initiatives.
  • Adhere to professional codes of ethics and standards of practice (e.g., OCSWSSW, if applicable).
  • Participate in regular debriefs, performance reviews, and Communities of Practice.
  • Demonstrate self-awareness and seek support as needed to sustain effective, healthy practice.

Knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in this role

  • Post-secondary education in Social Services, or a related field, with relevant experience in community-based mental health and/or housing services.
  • Knowledge and application of harm reduction, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and support individuals with complex mental health and substance use needs.
  • Proven crisis intervention, de-escalation, and supportive counselling skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills that promote collaboration, empathy, and cultural safety.
  • Familiarity with housing stability practices, tenancy rights, and community resources.
  • Experience with electronic documentation systems and proficiency with Microsoft Office tools.
  • Excellent written communication, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Assets: ASIST, NVCI, Trauma-Informed Care, and other relevant certifications.
  • Requirements: Current First Aid & CPR certification, Naloxone administration training, Valid Ontario driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle

Working conditions

  • 40 hours per week, including a combination of day, evening, overnight, and weekend shifts.
  • Onsite work at the Maria Street supportive housing location in Acton (primary site), with potential support at other Support House housing sites across Halton as required.
  • Involves direct resident interaction, occasional exposure to crisis situations, and engagement in harm reduction practices.
  • Regular movement between indoor residential and community environments is required.
  • Participation in rotating shifts and occasional on-call support as required by program operations.
  • This position offers a starting annual salary of $58,480.

  • Acton, ON L7J 2C8: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (preferred)

Education:

  • AEC / DEP or Skilled Trade Certificate (preferred)
