Permanent- Human Resources Business Specialist

Part Time, 24 hours/week (6hrs, 4 days/week, onsite)

Waterloo, Ontario

Working as a team with the Human Resources Business Partners, the Human Resources Business Specialist provides various HR support to the Human Resources Department. They will work on department projects/priorities, seeking to promote and develop effective Human Resources practices and department procedures for the best interests of all employees within Karis Disability Services. Under the coaching and mentorship of a designated Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP), the Human Resources Business Specialist is a developing role that will assist in providing general guidance, education, and counsel on Human Resources (HR) activities such as scheduling principles, employee accommodation, performance management, and employee development.

The Human Resources Business Specialist will respect and uphold the Values, Vision and Mission of Karis Disability Services, demonstrating the highest standards of courtesy and respect in their dealings with other employees, persons supported and internal and external stakeholders.

Organizational Support

  • Provide District HR guidance and support for routine HR inquiries and matters, under the mentorship, coaching, and approval of a designated Human Resources Business Partner.
  • Attend meetings with HR Business Partner mentor(s), such as District Leadership meetings, to observe and learn HR best practices and advisory approaches.
  • Participate on organizational committees as requested by the Director of Human Resources, providing Human Resource perspective under the guidance of senior HR staff.
  • Co-create and deliver presentations with HR Business Partner mentor(s) for internal HR and leader education sessions.
  • Support HRBPs by organizing documents, taking notes during investigations and grievance meetings (observer role), and assisting with file preparation, while not leading investigations or labour relations matters independently.

Department Support

  • Assist with each of the departmental specializations as needed, including the completion of work assigned by the HRBP specialization lead or Director of Human Resources.
  • Research and draft policy revisions with direction provided by the Director of Human Resources.
  • Compile data to report on Department Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Prepare Labour Relations Report for Director of Human Resources, primarily focusing on data compilation, formatting, and tracking metrics.
  • Provide continuous improvement recommendations for HR Department processes and procedures.
  • Conduct research relating to HR Department and District matters, including best practices, legislative updates, and benchmarking.
  • Monitor timelines and compile files relating to investigations and legal matters.
  • Provide vacation coverage for HR Business Partners by managing routine HR inquiries, attending scheduled meetings, and triaging urgent matters with support from the Director of Human Resources.
  • Participate actively in ad hoc HR projects, initiatives, and organizational activities as assigned by the Director of Human Resources or HRBP mentors.
  • Provide first-level support to the Director of Human Resources by serving as the initial point of contact for HR inquiries relating Waterloo Office employees, triaging requests, providing guidance on routine matters, and escalating complex, disciplinary, performance management, health and safety or labour relations concerns to the Director of Human Resources or designated HRBP

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of HR experience.
  • CHRP designation or in active pursuit of CHRP is an asset.
  • Strong computer, communication, conflict resolution and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, advanced computer skills
  • Understanding of Employment Standards and Health & Safety legislation and best practices.
  • Occasional travel required.
