- Lead the visual design of documentary projects from pre-production through to final delivery.
- Collaborate closely with directors and producers to define the visual style, mood, and camera approach for each project.
- Operate cameras during shoots in both New Zealand and the United Kingdom, capturing high-quality, emotionally resonant footage.
- Select appropriate camera, lens, lighting, and grip equipment to achieve the desired look and feel.
- Oversee and manage on-set lighting, framing, and composition to ensure consistent and cinematic image quality.
- Work hands-on with equipment rental companies to source and coordinate gear logistics.
- Assist with scouting locations and planning for optimal shooting conditions.
- Collaborate with local crews, gaffers, ACs, and other technical specialists to ensure smooth production days.
- Maintain strong working relationships with suppliers and freelancers, particularly across New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
- Ensure all camera and lighting equipment is properly maintained, transported, and functioning during production.
- Troubleshoot technical issues on set as they arise to keep productions running smoothly.
- Work closely with the production team to suggest gear options that balance creative needs with budget constraints.
- Proactively identify efficiencies in equipment usage and crew structure.
- Act as a key creative collaborator alongside directors, producers, and post-production teams.
- Offer creative input to enhance storytelling through cinematography, framing, and lighting choices.
Requirements:
- Proven experience as a Director of Photography or Camera Operator in documentary filmmaking.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating a variety of visual styles, especially in non-fiction storytelling.
- Experience working on international shoots, particularly in the United Kingdom, is highly valued.
- Deep technical knowledge of modern cinema cameras, lenses, lighting setups, and sound considerations.
- Proficiency with both natural light and controlled lighting setups.
- Understanding of post-production workflows related to footage handling, editing and colour grading.
- Existing network of freelance camera assistants, gaffers, and other production crew in the United Kingdom and New Zealand is a plus.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to take creative direction while contributing visual ideas.
- Comfort working across diverse cultural and professional environments.
- Willingness to travel between New Zealand and the United Kingdom as production schedules require.
