Position Details
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Leads and collaborates with faculty and academic departments to design implement, and revise curriculum for non-credit Academic English and Pathway courses in alignment with HIP program goals.
- Works in a team environment with other IEP/Pathway instructors and the Hofstra International Programs team to prepare, select, and use appropriate teaching and learning materials for international students.
- Develops relevant and appropriate lesson plans that incorporate effective teaching strategies and meet the individual needs of students.
- Assesses students using high-quality formative and summative evaluations.
- Provides oral and written feedback to students and staff.
- Provides out-of-class academic support for students via workshops, tutoring, etc.
- Manages a range of administrative tasks—approximately 50% of the role—, including, but not limited to: generating students’ academic progress reports, submitting weekly grades, tracking attendance, and attending meetings with or about students.
- Provides teaching coverage in the absence of other colleagues.
- Conducts weekly office hours.
- Participates in relevant social events and activities (e.g., accompanying trips).
- Participates in and contributes to orientation sessions.
- Acts as a positive ambassador for Hofstra International Programs.
- Participates in staff development and professional training as required.
- Attends university and program meetings as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree in TESOL is required. Degrees in closely related fields, such as (but not limited to) Applied Linguistics or Adult Education may be considered if accompanied by substantial TESOL coursework and experience or a TESOL Certification.
- 3-5 years of related instructional and curriculum development experience, including one year in an academic ESL program.
- 3 years of related administrative experience within higher education, language programs, or international education settings.
- Demonstrable knowledge of TESOL best practices, applied linguistics, second language acquisition, language-teaching methodologies and assessment.
- Proficiency with educational technologies, including learning management systems and student information and CRM systems.
- Excellent English language ability, exceptional communication skills, and a dynamic, charismatic personality.
- Competence in a foreign language is preferred.
- TEFL certifications (CELTA, DELTA, Bridge, or Oxford) are a plus.
- Overseas experience or experience teaching in multicultural/multilingual classrooms desired.
- Salary ranges indicated for positions covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement are in accordance with the CBA.
