Summary
We are seeking an Intake Counselor to join our team at Counselling and Family Services. This position combines two integrated roles: (1) providing short-term counselling through CFS Ottawa’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) pilot in collaboration with Family Services
Ottawa; and (2) a secondment to the Ottawa Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic (ONPLC) to deliver trauma-informed services as part of an inter-professional primary care team. The successful candidate will deliver high-quality, client-centered counselling and contribute to system navigation and practical support in both settings.
Responsibilities
Intake Counsellor (1 day/week)
- Deliver short-term, solution-focused counselling to individuals accessing services through employer contracts
- Support basic program development and implementation tasks as required
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with program standards
- Collaborate with administrative and communications teams to support outreach and quality assurance
Ottawa Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic (ONPLC) Secondment (2 days/week)
- Provide trauma-informed counselling to adult clients with complex health, mental health, and social needs
- Work collaboratively within an inter-professional primary care team
- Participate in care planning and case discussions with NPs and social work colleagues
- Support system navigation for clients facing barriers to access
- Offer practical support to connect clients with appropriate community-based services
- Maintain clinical documentation in the clinic’s Client Record Management System EMHware
- Coordinate care with CFS and FSO to ensure continuity of service
Additional combined responsibilities:
- Provide in-person and community-based services as the primary mode of delivery, with flexible working arrangements as outlined by CFS policies and applicable guidelines.
- Utilize Evidence-Based Interventions: Implement various evidence-based interventions, such as trauma-informed, narrative and solution-focused brief therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
- Community Collaboration: Engage with community organizations to ensure continuity of care and refer clients to appropriate resources and services.
- Perform outreach duties for the organization, as approved by your supervisor.
- Supervise the work of placement students, as determined with your supervisor.
- Maintain Confidentiality: Ensure all client information is handled with the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism.
- Documentation: Keep accurate and timely records of client sessions and progress, etc. In client management software system.
- To engage in regular supervision and evaluation process.
- To provide a minimum of sixty-five (65%) of work hours in direct service.
- To fulfill the administrative requirements of the job including weekly schedules, outlook calendars, petty cash, expense claims, leave requests etc.
- To participate in staff and team meetings of Agency.
- Ensure that conduct represents the agency’s values and upholds the Ontario Human Rights Code.
- To represent the organization in all aspects of this position
- To perform other duties consistent with the purpose of this position, as deemed necessary.
- The flexibility to provide client services a maximum of two evenings a week.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative
Requirements
- Professional Registration: Must be a registered member of the College of Social Workers or College of Registered Psychotherapists.
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in a counselling setting.
- Ability to demonstrate empathy and professionalism in supporting clients
- Demonstrated experience providing short-term and trauma-informed counselling
- Community Resources: Comprehensive understanding of community resources and services available to support individuals and families.
- Demonstrated knowledge of professional standards and ethical guidelines for social workers and psychotherapists.
- Commitment to understanding and applying an intersectional and feminist, antiracist, anti-oppressive, anti-homophobia, anti-transphobia, disability justice and First Nations, Métis and Inuit justice and reconciliation lens.
- Experience in working with diverse populations based on, among other things, culture, race, socio-economic status, gender identity and expression, and sexual orientation.
- Fluency in English and French (written and spoken) required
- Additional language skills are a strong asset
- Proven ability to work with complex issues.
- Strong organisational and planning skills
- Computer and technical skills, including MS 365 and client databases.
- Ability to set goals and prioritize multiple tasks.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative
- Have the authority to work in Canada
