This is a local hire position and any offer of employment with the BBC will be conditional upon you having the right to work in Australia.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

BBC News Streaming journalists based internationally work with the wider News Streaming team to deliver streaming output and iPlayer curation during UK overnight hours; you will often be working closely with a senior journalist based in Singapore.

Based in Sydney, you’ll run overnight UK streaming output and curate short-form news for iPlayer, helping shape how UK audiences start their day.

Working closely with colleagues in Singapore and the UK, you’ll identify live video opportunities and respond to breaking news. You’ll also plan upcoming streams, and ensure timely, high-quality content reaches audiences around the clock by curating the BBC News presence on iPlayer in overnight UK hours with the latest short-form news video.

Your role will shape how audiences experience the latest news stories as they unfold.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
Run BBC News’ streaming output during UK overnight hours – including at weekends on rotation - working closely with colleagues in Singapore, Sydney and the UK to deliver seamless live and on-demand coverage across platforms
Produce and curate high-quality live streams for breaking news, major planned events and emerging off-diary stories, using News Channel output and other sources to create engaging experiences for digital audiences.
Identify, select and showcase the best short form video journalism from existing BBC News content; creating compelling thumbnails and engaging titles and synopses and ensuring all output meets the BBC’s editorial standards.
Plan and prepare upcoming streams, updating content prospects and delivering comprehensive handovers to support continuous coverage across time zones.
Work flexibly across differing weekday and weekend shifts as part of the team’s commitment to delivering always-on news coverage for audiences around the world.
Building strong partnerships with colleagues across BBC News – especially in Singapore and Sydney – to identify new opportunities to maximise the impact of our video journalism on iPlayer.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

Strong editorial judgement, with a sound understanding of BBC Editorial Guidelines, media law and compliance requirements across digital platforms.
Proven experience producing live and on-demand news content, with the ability to cover a wide range of stories, based on a solid understanding of the UK news agenda
A deep understanding of how audiences consume video and audio across streaming and digital platforms, with the ability to use analytics and audience insights to inform editorial decisions and maximise engagement.
Confidence working with newsroom systems, production tools and evolving technologies.
Excellent organisational and multitasking skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, make sound decisions under pressure and respond effectively to a rapidly changing news agenda.
A collaborative and adaptable approach, with experience working in agile, multi-disciplinary teams and building effective relationships across functions.
Strong communication skills and the ability to take ownership for output, while contributing positively to team goals and proactively supporting the News Streaming team’s senior journalists in other locations and time zones.
