Junior Geologist

Position Summary

The Junior Geologist operates with a variable office-to-field work ratio (as outlined in their contract), adapting to project demands and seasonal variations. Field responsibilities may include drill rig supervision, drill chip/core logging and processing, geological mapping and prospecting, safety management and operational support. Office duties may encompass project support, data acquisition, validation, and collaborative reporting. Physical demands involve moderate to difficult activities during fieldwork, using various tools and equipment. This is an entry-level role, well suited to a recent geology graduate, where the Junior Geologist works under the guidance of a Senior or Project Geologist to build practical field and technical experience. The dynamic work environment requires adaptability to variable conditions, emphasizing safety and clear communication for effective project execution.

Key Accountabilities

Saftey:

• Understand and mitigate safety concerns in the field, working within Dahrouge's HSE Plan and site-specific safety management systems.
• Provide input into daily prestart/toolbox meetings to reinforce safe work practices.
• Support completion of safety documentation, including but not limited to job safety analyses (JSAs), risk assessments, and equipment and workplace inspections.

Surveying and Prospecting:

• Assist with project preparation and field logistics.
• Conduct geochemical and (occasionally) geophysical surveys and prospecting activities.
• Participate in surface mapping and prospecting programs.

Drill chip and Core processing:

• Support core processing tasks such as geotechnical logging, geological logging, sampling, core photography, specific gravity measurements, and sample dispatch, in collaboration with Geotechnicians and Project Geologists on site.

Mapping, Interpretation and Quality Assurance:

• Support geological mapping and interpretation, contributing to the team's overall understanding of project sites.
• Assist with data acquisition, data compilation and report writing.
• Ensure the quality of data captured during programs meets company standards and supports JORC Code-compliant reporting.

Drill Supervision:

• Support drilling activities, including drill site set-up, progress tracking, and adherence to safety standards.
• Occasionally guide field assistants, vacation students or work-experience placements, ensuring their effective contribution to project objectives.

Position Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Earth Sciences or a related field (Honours viewed favourably); coursework should meet the eligibility requirements for Graduate membership with AusIMM or AIG.

Experience: • 0–2 years; recent graduates, including those entering directly from university, are encouraged to apply.

Designations & Certification: • Current unrestricted driver’s licence.• Senior/Remote First Aid and CPR certification.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Able to support projects independently and confidently in the office (when applicable) and in the field, under the guidance of a senior geologist.
• Willing and able to contribute ideas and participate in larger exploration and resource programs.
• Developing understanding of industry standards, with awareness of regional Australian geological settings and processes.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office and geological software (e.g., ArcGIS, Leapfrog/Micromine, and statistical applications).

• 
  Familiarity and application of the Dahrouge Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Plan and the Professional Practice Management Plan (must be reviewed and signed during orientation).

Working Conditions

Fieldwork

• Exposure to harsh weather, remote terrain, and potential wildlife hazards (e.g., snakes), often on a FIFO/DIDO roster, contributing to physical exertion and discomfort.

• Core logging involves lifting up to 25 kg and maintaining focus under pressure.

Office Work

• Generally controlled, with some pressure during deadlines.

• Minimal hazards compared to the field, though discomfort may arise from prolonged computer work.

Overall

• Strong commitment to safety and adherence to protocols in the field.

• Exposure to hazards varies by project, location and season, requiring adaptability.

• Clear communication essential for addressing safety concerns and supporting the team.
