Juvenile Probation Officer Trainee: $28.67 - $38.42 hr.
Juvenile Probation Officer: $31.55 - $42.32 hr.
Juvenile Probation Officer Trainee Description
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
This is an entry level position in the Juvenile Probation Officer classification series; under close supervision, performs professional juvenile case management and supervision while utilizing evidence-based practices that are supported by research data designed to achieve identified outcomes established by the Juvenile Department. Performs other duties as assigned.
Juvenile Probation Officer Trainees satisfactorily meeting the experience, knowledge, training requirements, skills and abilities of a Juvenile Probation Officer may be promoted to the classification of Juvenile Probation Officer.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the close supervision of a Juvenile Program Supervisor who sets goals, assigns caseload, and reviews performance by observation and through reports and conferences. May also receive department orientation and consultation with Juvenile Probation Officers.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervision of other employees is not a responsibility of positions in this class.
Juvenile Probation Officer Description

Works under the general supervision of a Juvenile Program Supervisor, who sets goals, assigns caseload and reviews performance by observation and through reports and conferences.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervision of other employees is not a responsibility of positions in this class. However, if selected to be in a lead worker position, acts as lead worker over Juvenile Probation Officer Trainees, student placements, and volunteers. If in a lead worker position, may provide guidance to other Probation Officers.
Typical Duties - Duties include, but are not limited to the following
This position provides services to monolingual Spanish-speaking individuals; therefore, fluent bilingual Spanish/English skills are required.
- Intake clients to inform them of Juvenile Department processes and assess the needs, strengths and risk level of clients utilizing department approved tools and professional assessments.
- Develop, monitor and update case plans that include evidence-based practices to address the needs, strengths and risk level of the client. Provide Title IV-E case plans on identified youth.
- Cognitive restructuring, skill development, emotional regulation and behavior modification interventions that address criminogenic needs are delivered using the EPICS model.
- Coordinate with the District Attorney's office to process new cases, referrals, violations and case closures.
- Create and maintain timely case records, correspondence and documents utilizing approved software and applications.
- Prepare court orders and present written and verbal case information and dispositional recommendations to the court.
- Monitor clients for compliance with court ordered conditions. Make regular contact, both face-to-face and by phone, with client, parents, school staff and treatment and program staff. Provide additional case management and interventions for non-compliance.
- Make referrals to the department, Court, OYA and community programs by completing all necessary documentation.
- Contact victims and coordinate with the Marion County DA's Office to gather restitution information, recommend restitution amounts to the court, and monitor payment of restitution.
- Participate in staffing's regarding clients (YST, resource committee, etc.) at local schools and other agencies.
- Prepares timely digital and paper reports and orders for the case record and the Court; prepares and presents information regarding clients to the Court, presents dispositional recommendations.
- Develop, monitor and update case plans that include evidence-based practices and components required for grant or subsidy reimbursements that address the needs, strengths and risk level of juveniles while maintaining confidentiality.
- Makes contact with victims, negotiates restitution amount for FAAs, recommends department and court fee and monitors the collection of all financial obligations.
- Collaborates with public and private agencies and utilizes community resource to develop case plans and juvenile placements.
- Maintain collaborative relationships with department personnel and programs to facilitate services to juveniles.
- Provide feedback regarding program development, policies, procedures, data collection, statistics and records
- Other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
Requirements for the Position
Juvenile Probation Officer Trainee Requirements
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in social or behavioral sciences, or a related field; OR
- Any satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience relevant to the position.
- Two (2) years of paid experience working with high-risk youth; OR
- Five (5) years of Juvenile Probation Officer Experience; OR
- Any satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience relevant to the position.
- This position provides services to monolingual Spanish-speaking individuals; therefore, fluent bilingual Spanish/English skills are required. An additional 5% will be added to the hourly wage as compensation for this skill. Finalist will be required to pass a verbal and written Standardized Spanish/English Fluency Assessment as part of the hiring process.
- The finalist for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check; however, conviction of a crime may not necessarily disqualify an individual for this position.
- Must possess a current driver's license in the applicant's state of residence and an acceptable driving history. Marion County will obtain a copy of the driving record for all qualified applicants from Driver and Motor Vehicle Services and review the driving re4cord according to the Marion County policy and procedure for Driving on County Business. - This is a safety sensitive/special needs position. Final candidates selected for this position will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen, including testing for marijuana. - Physical ability to secure and maintain custody of resistive juveniles.

- This is a full-time position, which is eligible for overtime.
- Typical Work Schedule: 40 hours/week with varying days and hours, depending upon the needs of the department and program.
Some knowledge of: juvenile development, risk and protective factors, family systems ; assessment and intervention techniques with juveniles and families; and the juvenile justice system.
Ability and skill to: communicate effectively in written and oral form; conduct interviews of juveniles and families; gather, evaluate and integrate pertinent information for case planning and decision making make recommendations on disposition of cases; act as a liaison in the community; work with individuals from a variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds; manage and adapt to changes in work flow, juvenile justice practices, and/or department directives; develop cooperative working relationships with other employees and the public; effectively operate a keyboard, computer and navigate computer software; drive a motor vehicle; physical ability to assist in securing and maintaining custody of resistive juveniles.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Operates a motor vehicle; sees using depth perception; stands; sits; moves about the work area; lifts and carries up to 10 lbs.; pushes and pulls up to 125 lbs.; moves carts weighing up to 100 lbs.; operates a keyboard; speaks clearly and audibly; reads a 12 pt. font; hears a normal level of speech; works in areas that may be exposed to smoke, noise or chemicals; works in areas that may be uneven; possible risk of OSHA Blood/Body Fluid exposure.
PUBLIC SERVICE LOAN FORGIVENESS
Marion County is a qualifying public employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, full-time employees working at the County may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance on Direct Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan.
