Based in Pōneke Wellington, our Policy Puni leads across the public sector to understand and prioritise issues, needs and opportunities impacting on Māori development and wellbeing. The Puni consists of 8 teams focusing on specific Policy areas.

Whānau Ora Policy focuses on developing policy and policy advice on social issues relating to whānau and hapu, and supporting enablers of whānau resilience, wellbeing and mana motuhake through the promotion of whānau-centred policy approaches and indigenous whānau ora practice, across government and in the community. We are looking for our next policy superstar to join this agile and collaborative team.

Te whai wāhitanga | The opportunity

Te Puni Kōkiri is leading the mahi of embedding whanau centred approaches and building connectedness among government agencies. As a Policy Analyst you will.

  • Provide credible, evidence-based advice anchored in the context of iwi, hapu, whānau and Māori as it applies to the aims of the Whānau Ora Policy team
  • Conduct thorough and detailed analysis of complex policy issues to understand their implications and identify potential solutions
  • Work collaboratively with peers at Te Puni Kōkiri and with organisations including Ara Poutama Aotearoa, Te Manatū Whakahiato Ora and Oranga Tamariki.
  • Apply and advise on te ao Māori and Te Tiriti based frameworks as they relate to policy
  • Contribute towards the goals set out in Whānau Ora Outcomes
  • Contribute to robust team discussion and promote a culture of continuous feedback.

The appointment range for this role is between $68,406 to $84,793 per annum and the salary will be determined based on the successful candidate's skills and experience.

Mōu | About you

An aspiring policy professional, you will have experience in a government policy shop and/or and understanding of te ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi frameworks as they apply to policy. You may be familiar with legislation, including

  • The mix of knowledge, skills, practices, and behaviours required by a modern policy practitioner to be able to deliver quality policy advice with the desire to continually learn and grow your policy skillset
  • An understanding of, and ability to prioritise the flow of information, with the conceptual and analytical skills to provide solutions to ambiguous or complex problems.
  • Have highly developed communication skills, including written. Ideally you will have some competency in te reo Māori, or as a minimum have a willingness to learn
  • Are comfortable in an ao Māori environment and are comfortable in situations where tikanga is observed.
  • Confidence to engage with and build strong long-term relationships with key stakeholders.
