We are currently hiring a Laboratory Quality Technician to join the team at our Underground Salt Mine located in Goderich, Ontario. This is a 4-month contract. This is not a fly in/fly out operation.
Compass Minerals’ Goderich Salt Mine, located 1,800 feet under Lake Huron, is the largest underground salt mine in the world. The mine is as deep as the CN Tower in Toronto is tall. The rock salt produced at the mine is used to keep citizens in North America safe as they travel through winter snow and ice. The salt is shipped to hundreds of communities around the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence Seaway. Some of the salt is trucked to the Compass Minerals plant less than 4 kilometers away, to be packaged for distribution and sale at retailers in North America. The salt is also sold in bulk to manufacturers that make plastics, detergents, disinfectants and other important products.
Goderich is named Canada’s Prettiest Town and is best known for its stunning sunsets. Goderich is a lakeside community of 8,000 people located approximately 1.5 hours from London and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.
HOW WILL YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THE TEAM?
Under direct supervision, this position performs sampling and other routine laboratory procedures related to preparing and analysis of rock salt samples for physical, particle size, and chemical composition. This position also performs routine chemical laboratory procedures related to preparing salt and water sample for analysis.
- Process sample collection and quality laboratory duties - includes chemical, physical and particle size analysis
- Logs samples, creates labels, prepares and transports samples
- Analyzes and reports test results
- Maintains quality control records for all stages throughout the sampling process
- Maintains confidentiality of records
- Administration and clerical duties: filing, recordkeeping, data entry into computer database, distributes test results
- Maintains cleanliness of laboratory surfaces and ensures hazardous waste is disposed of in accordance with Compass Minerals’ waste management plan.
- Performs water testing to fulfill our site’s Environmental Compliance requirements.
- Perform other related duties as required.
WHAT SHOULD YOU BRING TO THE ROLE?
- 6 months of laboratory experience
- Some college/university training (Chemistry, Science, Chemical Engineering)
- Proficiency with MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word)
- Strong organizational skills, accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to follow detailed oral and written directions,
- Ability to perform basic mathematical computations and calculate metric weights and volumes
- Strong communication skills (written and oral) and the ability to respond promptly to customer needs.
- Ability to perform sample collection in an underground environment, and to learn and apply specialized laboratory techniques and procedures
- This is a Monday-Friday position, working 8 hours.
- If you do not live nearby, you will be required to relocate to the area. A relocation package is available to those that qualify.
