The Department of Pharmacy at Te Toka Tumai, Auckland City Hospital has a fantastic opportunity for a super-organised pharmacist who’d like to flex their professional, communication and change management skills and try something new. Perhaps you are a clinical pharmacist who would like to pursue developing leadership and business skills. Representing the Pharmacy Department both organisationally and externally (e.g. with PHARMAC, other hospitals and regions, suppliers etc.) this role has broad organisational scope, requires high-level decision making and sound change management skills. Responsible for coordinating PHARMAC consultations and tenders as well as screening and coordinating rapid assessments, unlicensed, off-label and free-stock applications governed by Te Toka Tumai’s Medicines Access Policy - you’re going to need clinical decision-making skills, the ability to have difficult conversations and to juggle unpredictable workloads. As implementation coordinator for new drugs / clinical changes as well as secretary to the Hospital Medicines Committee, you’re going to need to be naturally engaged and collaborative, be organised and have a high work rate. A natural teacher and improvement specialist you will be the ‘go to’ person for queries regarding PHARMAC, schedule rules, and medicines funding and will be committed to improving the departmental knowledge base around these aspects of practice. Procurement and supply chain issues also fall under this roles remit, you will need to understand and evaluate the clinical risk, identify stakeholders, prioritise and agree options, coordinate and communicate effectively to ensure a continued and safe supply and clinical service to our patients.

Te Toka Tumai’s Pharmacy Department is an innovative and exciting place to work. We employ over 100 staff including those working within two retail pharmacies, and a flagship inpatient service covering both supply and clinical functions. The Pharmacy Service serves over 1200 inpatient beds with service provision to a full array of secondary and tertiary level clinical and operational services. The main responsibilities of this important leadership role will be to:

  • Support the Service Clinical Director/Business Support Strategic Lead to ensure sound medicines management to improve the quality of patient care via appropriate, cost-effective, evidence-based medicines use atTe Toka Tumai
  • Ensure the availability of appropriate medicines for Te Toka Tumai by managing the clinical and contractual aspects of the pharmaceutical procurement function of the Pharmacy Medicines Management team

Nga Pūkenga Motuhake | Important Skills

  • B. Pharm. or other recognised pharmacy qualification
  • NZ registered pharmacist who holds a current APC with the Pharmacy Council of NZ
  • Management of hospital pharmacy service operations
  • Experience of management of drug procurement
  • Clear understanding of current developments in the provision of hospital pharmacy services
  • Minimum of 3 years pharmacy experience including 2 years in the NZ hospital environment within the last 3 years
  • Evidence of senior clinical pharmacy skills in a hospital environment
  • Good organisational skills and excellent written, oral communication and interpersonal skills within and outside pharmacy
  • A high degree of IT literacy including use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Access
  • Experience of audit, data analysis and project work
  • Implementation planning and change management
  • Successful pharmacy licencing, quality audit or project experience
  • A high degree of IT literacy including the use of Microsoft Word and Excel
