Mo te tunga | About the role

Evidence-Based Policing (EBP) is about using information, crime-science and problem-solving methods to ensure that proven approaches and tactics inform our choices, are seen in the results, and provide confidence that what we do works.

EBP presents an opportunity for New Zealand Police to embed an evidence base into all our operations. The Service Centre comprises three specialised teams that together contribute to a multi-disciplinary and integrated approach to deliver high quality and innovative work. This is an opportunity to contribute at the strategic level to enhance our delivery of `what works' to benefit the frontline.

The Lead Research Insights position provides robust thought leadership and expertise in research for the EBP Service Centre and Police. Working collaboratively across EBP and the wider organisation, you will provide strategic input and advice regarding the planning and delivery of research as well as support for the translation and use of research-derived evidence into insights that support and drive operational change.

You will provide mentoring and coaching to team members reflecting your area of technical expertise and work collaboratively to lead the planning and oversight of key programmes of work. You will hold responsibility for the New Zealand Police Research Panel and work closely with managers and other staff to ensure the delivery of an innovative EBP work programme.

You will be a go-getter with proven project management and research expertise and an excellent track-record building and managing internal and external relationships. You will be comfortable guiding long-duration robust research initiatives as well as adept at pivoting and providing rapid evidence informed insights to support during times of urgency.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide specialist knowledge in crime science and/or evidence-based policing;
  • Seek ways to `do things better' and `do better things';
  • Grow others by transferring technical knowledge;
  • Scan, anticipate and respond to challenges, changes in trends or significant shifts in context, sense opportunities, take the initiative, make things happen; and
  • Play a key role in delivering the functions and deliverables of their team and work programme.

He aha taau e kawe mai | What you'll bring

Whilst we are looking for skills, knowledge and experience relevant to the role, we also place high importance on your state of mind, the alignment of your values with ours, your ability to contribute to and build high performing teams, and the way that you lead yourself or others.

  • Sound academic background with credibility within national and international academic communities.
  • Experience conducting research in operational environments and translating research into operational delivery, preferably in a policing or criminology environment.
  • Required Qualifications: Relevant postgraduate qualification and/or equivalent professional experience in translating research evidence into operational contexts.
  • A positive and pro-active approach to their work, with a willingness to "learn the way forward".

  • This is a Wellington based position with an expectation of periods of travel.
