Roles

The Teacher Assistant works alongside classroom and specialist teachers (Art, Music, Physical Education, and STEAM) to enhance the academic program and support the social-emotional development of all students. They establish positive rapport with students, families, and staff, and collaborate closely with the Classroom Teacher in most aspects of teaching and learning. Teacher Assistants support the implementation of SouthSide Elementary Charter School’s curriculum by facilitating small group and one-on-one instruction, interventions, and enrichment activities. They are familiar with school protocols and child development, and ideally have experience addressing challenging behaviors and supporting special education students. Teacher Assistants embrace the school’s mission and are committed to learning research-based best practices and using data to inform instruction.

Responsibilities:

Instructional Support

  • Assist with the preparation and organization of instructional supplies and materials.
  • Collaborate with the Classroom Teacher to provide small group and one-on-one instruction in core subjects.
  • Support students requiring additional help or accommodations.
  • Assist with lesson plan preparation and gathering supplies.
  • Accompany students to specialist classes and provide behavioral support.
  • Communicate effectively with families using their preferred methods
  • Identify and support students’ social-emotional and academic needs.

Classroom Management

  • Provide vigilant supervision during transitions, lunch, recess, hallway, playground, and field trips.
  • Monitor student behavior and enforce school and class rules
  • Maintain classroom organization and readiness for instruction.
  • Support Responsive Classroom practices.
  • Engage in professional development initiatives.
  • Serve as substitute for the Classroom Teacher when needed.
  • Help cultivate a learning environment that supports student growth.

Record Keeping and Administration

  • Assist with attendance and grade recording.
  • Help grade tests and homework.
  • Communicate student progress to parents.

Additional Support

  • Participate in curriculum and staff development activities.
  • Attend training sessions, conferences, or faculty meetings as needed.
  • Engage in family engagement activities.
  • Provide translation and interpreting support if bilingual.

Working Hours:

Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (with a 45-minute lunch, 30 minutes unpaid).

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of a Teacher Assistant Pre-Employment Training Program approved by the RI Department of Education (RIDE) (https://ride.ri.gov/teachers-administrators/other-tools-information/teacher-assistants)
  • Teacher Assistant Certification or Associate’s Degree or higher in a related field.
  • Completion of fingerprint background check.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.50 - $24.50 per hour

Work Location: In person
