About the Role
The School of Electrical Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences (EECMS) and Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy (CIRA) are seeking a passionate and knowledgeable academic with proven teaching skills and research experience across the specific fields of astrophysics and radio astronomy, to develop and deliver high-quality physics teaching programs and contribute to the integration of contemporary research into teaching. This will include lecturing at various undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and supervision of student research projects at undergraduate, Honours, Master’s and PhD levels.

You will also play an important part in the continued development of the research profile of the Physics and Astronomy discipline, working with the CIRA team to enhance research activity and collaboration in one or more of our key focus areas, including:
  • The Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO)
  • Radio transients
  • Pulsars
  • Jets and accretion processes
  • The Epoch of Reionisation

Your responsibilities will include:

Teaching
  • Actively contribute to the organisation, planning, delivery and evaluation of teaching in our Bachelor of Science and Master of Science (Physics) programs.
  • Demonstrate best practice, innovative teaching methods which enhance the student experience.
  • Actively engage with the Physics and Astronomy discipline and promote a positive and inclusive work environment.
  • Apply relevant health and safety standards, including required responsibilities of Supervisors for practical classes and research students.
  • Promote the discipline within and outside the University community by engaging in service and leadership roles, as well as outreach activities.
Research
  • Undertake world-class research, resulting in research student completions, publications in high impact peer-reviewed journals and successful grant applications.
  • Undertake principal supervision of honours and research master’s students and research doctoral students.
  • Undertake administrative functions associated with research activities.
Service
  • Contribute to academic service and leadership, engagement, and management within the University.
  • Contribute to external activities relevant to the discipline/profession and community engagement.
  • Foster and promote relationships with professional bodies, industry and affiliated associations, government departments, and the wider community.
Other
  • Engage in appropriate professional development and mentoring programs of Conduct and Vision, Mission and Values.

Who we are looking for – Selection Criteria:
Essential Criteria:
  • A doctoral qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. astronomy, astrophysics, physics, statistics, or computer science).
  • A strong understanding of pedagogical theory and contemporary educational practice relevant to the discipline and a record of contribution to the scholarship of teaching in the discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects.
  • Demonstrable track record of high-quality publications, relative to opportunity.
  • Demonstrated high level communication and interpersonal skills with a commitment to the development of a collegial and supportive working environment and the ability to interact with students and staff with cross cultural sensitivity.
  • Demonstrated commitment to integrity, health and safety, equity and inclusivity.
  • Demonstrated high-level organisational skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to applying relevant and applicable policies, procedures and legislation in the day-to-day performance of the functions of this position.
Desirable criteria:
  • Demonstrated familiarity with radio astronomy techniques.
  • Demonstrated expertise aligned with one or more of CIRA’s main research focus areas (SKAO, radio transients, pulsars, jets and accretion processes, the Epoch of Reionisation).
  • Demonstrated ability to secure research funding.
Role Requirements:
  • As this is a continuing (permanent) role, you will require permanent work rights in Australia. We will also consider international candidates who are eligible for a relevant visa.

Formed in 2017, EECMS unites Curtin’s core expertise in physics, electrical engineering, computing, mathematics, and statistics to better understand and advance our data-driven world. As part of Curtin’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, EECMS is one of the university’s largest schools, with a rapidly expanding teaching and research portfolio. The School is at the forefront of emerging fields, including Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Quantum Technologies, Energy Informatics, and Immersive Technologies. The Physics and Astronomy discipline at Curtin University is a dynamic and research-intensive team within EECMS. With internationally recognised strengths in Quantum Physics, Radio Astronomy, Space Science, and Applied Physics, the team is strongly engaged in major global collaborations such as the Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO). The group fosters a vibrant academic environment, combining cutting-edge research with high-quality teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy (CIRA) is a multi-disciplinary research institute engaged in a range of projects involving or motivated by radio astronomy. CIRA’s activities draw together academic research and professional staff from a variety of science, engineering, and computing disciplines to tackle unique and demanding challenges in radio astronomy. CIRA is the lead organisation and operator of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), and a key participant in the international SKAO project.
