Shape the future of medicine at Curtin.

Curtin Medical School is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Teaching Academic to join us as Deputy Year One Coordinator. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a collegial, innovative, and student-focused team, committed to delivering high-quality medical education and supporting the success of our students as they begin their journey to becoming future doctors.

As Deputy Year One Coordinator, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the delivery, coordination, and continuous improvement of our Year One program. Working closely with the Year One Coordinator, Clinical Skills lead, Problem-Based Learning (PBL) lead, and a dedicated team of academics and professional staff, you will ensure that our students receive the best possible foundation for their medical studies.

About the Role
Your responsibilities may be varied, reflecting the dynamic needs of the program and the School. They may include:
  • Teaching & Learning
Deliver PBL tutorials, clinical skills sessions, lectures, workshops and interactive seminars that foster critical thinking, collaboration, and practical skills.
  • Curriculum Development
Collaborate with academic colleagues to refine and enhance teaching materials, tutor guides, and learning resources, ensuring they reflect contemporary practice and support student learning.
  • Assessment & Quality Assurance
Contribute to the design, development, and review of assessments, including question writing, blueprinting, and exam moderation, ensuring alignment with learning outcomes and accreditation standards.
  • Coordination & Leadership
Support the Year One Coordinator with program oversight, stepping into leadership responsibilities when required. Assist with scheduling, teaching calendars, and coordination of professional staff support. The Deputy’s role can be combined with other curriculum leadership roles in Year One.
  • Student Engagement & Support
Provide pastoral care and mentorship, ensuring students feel supported and encouraged in their transition into medicine.
This is a role where no two days are the same – and where you will have the chance to combine your clinical expertise with a passion for teaching and shaping future medical professionals.

About You
We are seeking an individual who is both a clinician and an educator, with a genuine passion for developing the next generation of medical professionals.
You will bring:
  • A medical degree
  • Extensive experience in healthcare education and a solid understanding of educational practices.
  • A commitment to excellence in teaching and fostering student development.
  • Strong organisational, interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • A student-focused mindset, with a commitment to supporting both learning and wellbeing.
  • High level IT skills and experience with Learning Management Systems.
Desirable:
  • Doctoral qualification and or other relevant post-graduate qualifications.
  • Unrestricted AHPRA registration as a medical practitioner without any current undertakings or conditions.
  • Engagement in teaching and learning within Higher Education.
If you do not meet all the essential requirements, you are encouraged to apply, noting other relevant training, experience and background.

Role Requirements
As this is a continuing (permanent) role, you will require permanent work rights in Australia to be considered. Successful applicants are subject to a National Police Clearance, and background, integrity, and reference checks to Curtin’s satisfaction.

About the Team
You will be joining a dedicated teaching team, comprised of medical academics and professional staff, all working together to provide an outstanding learning experience for students. The team is collaborative, approachable, and student-centred, with a strong culture of sharing knowledge and supporting one another.

At the heart of the program is Problem-Based Learning (PBL), which encourages students to develop their clinical reasoning and teamwork skills early in their degree. The team also places a strong emphasis on student welfare and wellbeing, ensuring students are supported holistically, both academically and personally. As Deputy Year One Coordinator, you will work closely with:

  • The Year One Coordinator, who oversees the overall program.
  • PBL Lead, Clinical Skills Lead and Tutors, who deliver innovative, case-based learning.
  • Teaching Support Officers, who provide administrative and logistical support.
  • Other Academic Leaders, across the medical program to ensure seamless progression for students.

This collaborative structure provides ample opportunity to contribute ideas, develop leadership capability, and build your academic career in a supportive environment.
