ABOUT THE ROLE

The Leisure Life Skills Instructor is a highly organized team player who will join our interprofessional team in supporting the mission of St. Joseph’s Care Group. This role requires a strong appreciation for people-centered, strength-based care, self-management principles, and the unique challenges of chronic pain. The successful candidate will value accessibility, accountability, best practices, and continuous evaluation.

In this position, the Leisure Life Skills Instructor develops, organizes, and delivers therapeutic programs that support individuals living with chronic pain in achieving optimal health, independence, and community integration. Programming is provided in both individual and group settings, with the goal of preparing clients to access community programs and services following discharge. The role also includes participating in community education and outreach presentations.

WHAT YOU BRING

Education/Experience:

  • Degree/Diploma in Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation and Leisure Studies with Therapeutic Recreation course content (Therapeutic Recreation specialization) or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge and experience in the development of leisure and fitness programs designed to promote physical fitness independence self management self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Professional member in good standing with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO) and/or membership with the Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association or similar related associations is preferred

Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to provide presentations and group work
  • Excellent assessment skills and specific skills in developing appropriate interventions for clients with chronic pain and chronic disease self management
  • Familiarity with the decision guide model of care or principles of informed decision-making when working with clients

  • Knowledge of motivational interviewing techniques to effectively engage and support client behavior change

  • Demonstrated skills working on an interprofessional team, excellent leadership and communication skills, and skills in reasoning, problem solving, decision making, flexibility, time management, and organization
  • Demonstrated community-based experience and knowledge of accessible community activities
  • Demonstrated regular attendance at work

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position shall be conditional upon a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) where indicated, to ensure the absence of relevant criminal convictions.
  • Valid Ontario driver's license: Class G
