Taitara Mahi - Library Assistant, Learning & Discovery Library Assistant
Permanent Part Time

Across our Hastings, Flaxmere and Havelock North Libraries, Hastings District Libraries are centres for lifelong learning and recreation. We offer a wealth of resources and are safe, welcoming and vibrant community spaces. To support these, we are currently looking for the following positions:

  • Library Assistant (24 hours per week & 8 hours per week)
As a Library Assistant, you will provide excellent customer service by assisting with the day-to-day operations of the library. This includes shelving books, helping patrons find materials, managing library checkouts, helping the public with IT queries and supporting various library programs and services. You will also assist with maintaining a welcoming and safe environment for visitors, ensuring they have a positive experience while visiting the library.

  • Learning & Discovery Library Assistant (10 hours per week)
Our Learning & Discovery Library Assistants support the delivery of programmes, activities and events spanning our entire customer base, from babies to elderly. This role has three main components: customer service, administration duties such as preparing for events, and the delivery and running of library offerings. With that in mind, this position would suit someone who is not only organized and IT savvy but also outgoing and not afraid of speaking to groups, telling stories to children or running our epic Nerf Battles.

All of these roles will include working at least one weekend day.

Ōu wheako –about you,
To be successful in this role you will:

  • Have an understanding of the role of Libraries in our Communities.
  • Be able to engage with people from all walks of life, show empathy and be aware of the challenges people face in modern society.
  • Be flexible and able to accept change.
  • Be confident when assisting customers.
  • Have an understanding of tech systems, able to help our customers where they may need support.
  • Enjoy working in different environments.

Situated in the heart of Ngāti Kahungunu, the Hastings district and Hawke’s Bay offer an enjoyable environment in which to live, work, and play. We are an equal opportunity employer and we value diversity.

Are you passionate about fostering a culture of learning and discovery? Join us on our journey to make libraries vibrant, inclusive spaces where everyone can thrive!
