Library Manager

He angitūtanga: The opportunity

We are recruiting for a Manager, Community Place – Devonport Library to lead a talented team and build relationships within a library-loving community! With a proven track record in staff leadership, we are seeking a people person who can foster strong relationships with key stakeholders. You will also create effective community practice, addressing needs and priorities of the local board and local communities and provide a safe, welcoming environment for customers and staff.

Key responsibilities include:

  • day-to-day operational management of the library including responsibility for financial and staffing allocations
  • facilitate and grow community and partner-led activity which meets the needs of the community
  • collaboratively manage recruitment and induction of staff for the local board team, as well as the mentoring, upskilling and coaching of existing staff
  • lead and develop staff to deliver excellence in visitor experiences.

This is a permanent, full-time opportunity leading a team of 11, requiring flexibility to work across the Devonport-Takapuna local board as required. The library is open seven days a week with some late nights required to support programmes and events.

Some key requirements to be successful in this role:


  • Leadership and Management Experience: proven ability to lead, develop, and mentor a high-performing team.
  • Librarianship and Customer Services: experience working within a library environment supporting teams and customers to learn, build knowledge and capability.
  • Relationship Building: essential to success in community engagement and partnering within the Devonport-Takapuna local board community.
  • Embracing Change and Diversity: skilled in guiding teams through ambiguity, fostering diverse thinking, and creating a positive culture.

You will be committed to being a great Tiriti o Waitangi partner and you understand the importance of te ao Māori and te reo Māori within our places.

Salary band G, we are looking to appoint someone between $85 - $100K dependant on experience.
