Introduction:
About us.
A unique life requires a unique bank.
Defence Bank is a member‑owned bank with a proud history of serving the Australian Defence community for almost 50 years. Our purpose is to improve the financial wellbeing of our members, and we do this by putting people first — our members and our people.
We’re known for being collaborative, values‑led and genuinely flexible, with a strong focus on wellbeing, learning and doing work that matters.
Winner of the Best Reward & Recognition program 2024 and a finalist for Employer of Choice 2024, it is not only our employees who think our bank is truly one of the best places to work.
Description:
Sitting in the Operations Team, this is a newly established and influential permanent opportunity to help strengthen how risk is embedded where it matters most — at the frontline of our Member, Marketing and Operations teams.
As the Line 1 Risk Analyst – Member, Marketing & Operations, you will support the identification, management and uplift of operational and non‑financial risk within the first line of defence. Working closely with senior leaders, Compliance and Line 2 Risk, you’ll help embed strong, pragmatic risk practices that support sustainable business performance and positive member outcomes.
This role has a clear mandate to design, implement and continually improve first‑line risk frameworks, uplift controls maturity and champion a proactive risk culture. You’ll operate as a trusted partner to the business — bringing judgement, insight and influence in a highly regulated banking environment.
At Defence Bank, risk is not a barrier to progress. It is a business enabler — and this role is central to that philosophy.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
Partner with Member, Marketing and Operations leaders to identify, assess and manage operational and non‑financial risks within the first line of defence
Advise on risk gaps and support the development of practical, fit‑for‑purpose action plans
Design, implement and uplift controls frameworks, including control design and operational effectiveness testing
Establish and embed Control Self‑Assessments (CSAs) tailored to different business areas
Lead first‑line risk activity across change initiatives, product reviews and vendor onboarding
Support the management and remediation of incidents, issues, audit findings and compliance matters
Monitor regulatory and policy obligations and support the business to respond to emerging requirements
Prepare high‑quality risk and compliance reporting for governance forums and committees
Partner closely with Compliance, Legal and Line 2 Risk to ensure effective challenge and oversight
Champion a strong risk culture, uplifting risk awareness, capability and ownership across teams
Drive continuous improvement through smarter processes, documentation and automation
Skills and Experiences:
You are a risk professional who enjoys working close to the business and influencing outcomes, rather than operating remotely from them.
You will bring:
Experience in Line 1 risk, operational risk, compliance or product governance within banking or financial services
A strong understanding of risk management frameworks and the three lines of defence
Working knowledge of Australian financial services regulatory obligations (including APRA and ASIC expectations)
The ability to balance risk discipline with commercial and member‑focused decision‑making
Confidence partnering with senior leaders and coaching teams to take ownership of risk
Strong analytical, problem‑solving and stakeholder engagement skills
Relevant tertiary qualifications in risk, business, commerce or a related discipline
Experience partnering with marketing, operations and frontline teams in a retail banking environment will be highly regarded.
We count on you. And you can count on us.
