How will you contribute?
The Structural Composites Unit of the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology is at the forefront of advancing structural composite materials and their applications. As part of our ongoing efforts in this field, we are excited to announce a job opportunity for an experienced post-doctoral researcher specializing in computational modelling of materials and structures, with a focus on impact modelling of composites.
In the framework of a project funded by the European Defence Agency, we are looking to hire a post-doctoral researcher with a strong background in numerical modelling of materials and structures. Your role will be to improve the development of ballistic protection panels using computational numerical methods, and to validate your results by comparison to experimental tests of the designed panels.
Your activities will include:
- Participation to meetings with stakeholders in the framework of the project to determine requirements and define use-cases.
- Develop numerical models for ballistic testing for composite structures.
- Implement a Python-based workflows for automated execution of numerical simulations for parametric studies and design optimization.
- Supervision of the development and manufacturing of physical prototypes for testing.
- Contribution of the development and production of prototypes/demonstrator
- Compare modelling results with ballistic tests.
- Documenting the design process, iterations, and test analytics.

Education
- PhD in computational mechanics, mechanical engineering or a closely related major engineering discipline
Experience and skills
- Proficiency with finite element modelling and FEA software like ABAQUS Explicit or LS-DYNA
- Experience in impact modelling or continuum damage mechanics will be considered a strong advantage.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Good interpersonal skills, attitude to teamwork, both with the internal team and with external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously in managing technical, time-related, and organizational challenges
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Attentive to detail and critically minded.
- Interest for Research domain in computational mechanics and engineering.
- You must be a national of a member state of the European Union.
Language skills
- Fluent in English, both written and oral. French is considered as an advantage.
