About Us:

St. Clare’s Housing is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing affordable housing solutions in Toronto’s downtown core. We own and operate 7 apartment buildings, offering a stable home to tenants who have experienced homelessness and who often manage challenges related to mental health, addiction, and trauma. Our goal is to support tenants in maintaining long-term, successful tenancies while fostering a safe and inclusive community.

We are proud to be a Living Wage Employer, meaning we voluntarily pay wages that reflect the real costs of living in our community, which are higher than the provincial minimum wage. The living wage is calculated based on community-specific data and represents what a family with two working adults and two children needs to cover essential expenses and participate fully in society.

Position Overview:

We are looking for a Maintenance Assistant to support our maintenance team in keeping our properties safe, clean, and well-maintained. The Assistant will work alongside the Maintenance Worker to perform basic repairs, assist with preventive maintenance, and respond to tenant needs. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in property maintenance while contributing to a meaningful cause.

Accountability:

The Maintenance Assistant reports to the Property Manager(s) of the building(s) they are currently assigned to and must be willing to move to other buildings as necessary which can be with little notice.

Duties:

The duties of the Maintenance Assistant are as follows:

  • Assist the Maintenance Worker with routine repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Help with inspections of common areas and equipment to ensure they are in good working condition.
  • Support in responding to tenant requests and resolving minor issues.
  • Assist with cleaning and upkeep of common areas and outdoor spaces.
  • Help prepare vacant units for new tenants by conducting minor repairs and cleaning.
  • Organize and maintain tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Support the team with emergency maintenance calls, including after-hours work as needed.
  • Follow safety procedures and ensure work areas are clean and hazard-free.

What You Bring:

  • Basic knowledge of hand tools and equipment used in repairs.
  • Willingness to learn and assist with a variety of maintenance tasks.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and take direction.
  • Physical ability to perform manual labor, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • A positive attitude and a commitment to helping others.

Preferred Skills:

Some experience in maintenance, repair, or cleaning work is an asset.

  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Why Work with Us:

At St. Clare's, we are committed to not only providing a living wage but also ensuring that our staff feel supported in their roles. Our work environment is inclusive, community-driven, and aligned with our mission to reduce homelessness and provide housing stability for vulnerable populations. This is your chance to make a meaningful difference while advancing your career in property maintenance.
