Job Title:

Maintenance Facilities Worker

Physical Location:

Kent Campus - Kent, OH

Salary:

$16.24 - $16.97 (6 month rate)

Basic Function:

Perform general maintenance and related duties; assist other maintenance workers or supervisor. Reports to the Building Maintenance Supervisor or other designated supervisor.

Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:

Provide maintenance, repair, and labor functions related to corrective and preventative maintenance of buildings and grounds.

Perform minor installation and repair of electrical equipment and plumbing systems; perform minor carpentry and painting tasks; repair lighting systems by replacing ballasts, light bulbs and other components as required. May inspect and repair exit signs and emergency lights.

Monitor HVAC equipment and systems; read meters and gauges; record temperatures, pressure readings, etc.

Prepare buildings for functions and events (i.e. pull out bleachers; set up rails, tables and equipment; check timing devices and P.A. system).

May perform custodial and grounds keeping duties as required to meet department needs.

Answer telephone or two-way radio as required; provide general information to customers and/or take messages; respond to requests for service.

May operate vehicle to pick up and deliver parts and supplies.

May train and direct student employees or employees in a lower pay grade; may participate in training new Maintenance Facilities Worker employees.

May be assigned to work with other classifications such as skilled trades to complete tasks and learn new skills. Work assignments may rotate between buildings, zones or other repair facilities.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School diploma or GED equivalent, and ability to satisfactorily participate in and pass a building maintenance certificate program. Must be able to use a respirator and demonstrate the ability to work in high places or confined spaces.

License/Certification:

Valid Ohio driver's license with safe driving record.

Knowledge Of:

Basic understanding in one or a combination of the following areas: carpentry, electrical, plumbing, or heating/air conditioning
Basic mathematics (e.g. add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, and to calculate percentages) *

Skill In:

Written and interpersonal communication with the ability to communicate effectively with university personnel and the public – in person and over the telephone (e.g. provide routine information to customers, take messages, transmit work directives to students) *
Paint interior and exterior building surfaces *

Ability To:

Use hand and power tools and operate specialized equipment * Apply appropriate safety practices *
Lift up to 100 pounds *
Read (e.g. operating instructions, labels), write (e.g. work orders), and accurately follow oral, written, and graphic instructions *
Maintain accurate records *
Identify pairs of items that are the same or different * Work in high places and confined spaces *
Identify problems and take appropriate action *
Work varied hours and shifts to include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays Report to work with little notice in emergency situations
Satisfactorily participate in and pass a building maintenance certificate program *

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

Exposed to dirt, fumes, chemicals, heights, extreme temperatures and humidity, slippery surfaces, variable temperatures and weather conditions, and loud equipment noise; requires moderate physical effort to include frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds (e.g. motors), position oneself to perform a variety of repairs, etc., and extended periods of moving from one place to another as well as being in a confined area; requires on and off-campus travel.

Working Schedule:

Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; however, schedule may vary to meet departmental needs.
