This position is located in the Facility Management Division (FMD) of the Department of General Services (DGS). The FMD has the responsibility for maintaining and managing approximately 1 65 District Government owned and leased properties providing a working environment that maximizes customer agencies ability to perform their missions. To accomplish this, the division administers building operations and services, including engineering, custodial, inspection, planning, repairs, grounds maintenance and non-structural improvements.
Duties and Responsibilities
Performs general work involving the upkeep and maintenance of grounds and structures in and around areas throughout the District. Depending on the needs, incumbent may perform any or all of the tasks assigned to the grounds department. Maintains grass areas (utilizing a variety of power tools), edging sidewalks, cultivating the soil, planting grass seeds, spreading fertilizer, pulling weeds, trimming hedges/shrubbery, watering the grass and spraying foliage, raking and removing leaves; removing snow and ice from walkways, steps, driveways, etc.
Cultivates soil; fills in holes under swings and play equipment to prevent formation of puddles of water and erosion damage. Makes minor carpentry repairs such as tamping loose and protruding nails, tighten loose screws, repair coat hooks, tighten bolts on benches, ping pong and pool tables, repair sagging floorboards, replace missing ceiling and floor tiles. Performs brush/roller painting using ready prepared paints and preservatives as needed. May preform minor plumbing repairs such as clearing stopped up sinks, toilet bowls and drains.
Qualifications and Education
Skill in using a variety of tools such as mowers, grinders, cut blades, drill saws, generators, hand tools, portable electric tools, bench mounted power tools, soldering equipment, saw drills, palm sander, belt sander, wire cutters, etc.
Skilled in general techniques in landscaping and grounds maintenance; basic knowledge of woodworking techniques and ability to construct and install materials according to specifications.
Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
Knowledge of Materials
High school diploma or equivalent.
Licenses and Certifications
The incumbent of this position must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Working Conditions/Environment
Work is performed in all types of weather conditions and subject to dusty and dirty conditions. The incumbent is also subject to injuries such as cuts, bruises, electrical shock from falls or the dropping of moderately heavy equipment.
