The Australian National Maritime Museum is seeking an experienced and dynamic Manager, Building and Facilities to join the Facilities and Security team in a full-time, ongoing role.

About the Role
As the Manager, Building and Facilities, you will play a pivotal leadership role at the heart of the Museum’s operations ensuring our spaces are not only safe and functional, but dynamic, high-performing, and welcoming for staff, visitors, and partners alike.
This is an opportunity to lead the operational backbone of the Museum, driving the delivery of facilities and maintenance services that enable world-class experiences every day. From capital works through to continuous improvement initiatives, you will shape and deliver a diverse portfolio of projects that directly influence how the Museum operates now and into the future.
You will bring together people, systems, and priorities to turn strategy into action ensuring projects are delivered seamlessly, on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality and compliance. Your leadership will be central to strengthening operational capability and unlocking smarter, more efficient ways of working across the organisation.
With strong expertise across project governance, procurement, contract management, scheduling, and risk, you will confidently navigate complex environments providing clear direction, sound advice, and practical solutions that deliver real impact.
Working closely with internal teams, contractors, and suppliers, you will build trusted partnerships and foster a collaborative environment where challenges are solved and opportunities are realised.

Please note: This recruitment process is intended to fill both current and future vacancies. While the position on offer is ongoing, a merit pool of suitable applicants may be established to fill similar ongoing and non-ongoing positions within the next 18 months.
Key Accountabilities
Under broad direction, this position is responsible for delivering the following functions:
- Provide leadership and oversight of the Building and Facilities team, setting clear direction, building capability, and fostering an inclusive, collaborative and high-performing environment that supports the delivery of quality outcomes.
- Lead and deliver complex facilities, safety and security projects, exercising independent judgement to ensure outcomes align with organisational priorities, risk settings and governance requirements.
- Establish, implement and maintain effective project governance arrangements, ensuring appropriate controls, documentation, reporting and clear executive visibility of performance, risks and issues.
- Provide high-quality, evidence-based advice, options and recommendations to senior stakeholders to support informed decision-making and effective delivery of complex projects.
- Oversee and manage procurement and contract arrangements, ensuring compliance with the Commonwealth Procurement Rules and the PGPA Act, and achieving value for money, probity and compliance outcomes.
- Identify, assess and actively manage project risks in a live public environment, implementing mitigation strategies and escalating emerging issues as required.
- Lead, influence and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders to manage competing priorities, resolve complex issues and achieve agreed project and portfolio outcomes.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives in project management practices to enhance organisational capability, consistency and compliance.
The successful candidate will demonstrate their capacity against the following:
- Demonstrated leadership and management capability, including leading multidisciplinary teams, setting clear direction, building capability, and fostering an inclusive, collaborative and high-performing culture that delivers quality outcomes.
- Proven experience leading and overseeing complex building, facilities, safety and security projects, exercising independent judgement to deliver outcomes aligned with organisational priorities, governance requirements and risk settings.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain governance and risk management arrangements, including project controls, reporting, assurance and executive visibility across complex delivery environments.
- Strong experience providing high quality and evidence-based advice and recommendations to senior stakeholders, supporting informed decision-making and effective delivery of complex projects and initiatives.
- Well-developed stakeholder engagement, negotiation and commercial capability, including managing procurement and contract arrangements in compliance with the CPRs and PGPA Act, balancing competing priorities, and achieving value for money and compliant outcomes.
Qualifications and/or relevant experience required
Desirable:
- Qualifications and/or certification in project management (e.g., PRINCE2, Agile, PMBOK) or equivalent demonstrated experience.
- Demonstrated experience leading teams or supervising staff, including performance and capability development.
- Experience in building, facilities, safety or asset management environments, particularly in complex operational settings.
