What You’ll Do:
As the Manager of HSE Assurance and Security (Americas), you will lead the strategic development, oversight, and continual improvement of Northland Power’s Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Management System across the Americas region. Operating at the Company level, you will ensure our organization meets all legal and regulatory obligations while aligning with global Company HSE standards, including ISO 45001 and ISO 14001. This role strengthens governance, embeds HSE into business processes, and assures performance across our portfolio.
You will serve as the authority on HSE compliance and assurance and you will lead the development and coordination of people and travel security frameworks, ensuring duty-of-care requirements are met for employees, contractors, and visitors operating or travelling within the region.
This position is based in Toronto and required to be either in the Toronto office or at site 4 days per week

Key Responsibilities:

HSE Management System Development & Oversight

  • Support in the design, implementation, and continual improvement of the Company Global HSE Management System, in alignment with ISO 45001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001, and other relevant standards.
  • Ensure integration of HSE processes into Northland’s North American portfolio and support cross-functional harmonization with quality, ESG, and operational risk frameworks.
  • Provide guidance, training, and tools to the business to support the effective implementation of the HSE Management System.

HSE Compliance & Governance

  • Maintain and oversee the Company HSE legal register in collaboration with business leaders, ensuring compliance across jurisdictions.
  • Coordinate or fulfill statutory HSE responsibilities for the Toronto office in line with Canadian federal and provincial legislation (e.g., OHSA).
  • Monitor changes in regulatory requirements and industry standards, translating these into system or procedural updates where relevant.

HSE Assurance, Audits & Reporting

  • Lead HSE audits across North America, assessing NPI HSE Management System compliance and ISO readiness and internal assurance activities.
  • Track and report on HSE audit findings, non-conformities, and corrective action status at the Company level, ensuring consistency and transparency.
  • Monitor HSE performance indicators, analyze trends, and advise management on key risk areas and improvement opportunities.
  • Coordinate Company-level HSE reporting, including inputs for ESG disclosures, board reports, and external benchmarking (e.g., GRI).

Security (People & Travel Risk Management)

  • Develop, implement, and maintain the Americas People & Travel Security Framework, aligned with global HSSE expectations and duty‑of‑care requirements.
  • Act as the regional coordinator for travel risk, working with security partners (e.g., medical/security assistance providers) to ensure journey risk assessments, traveler tracking, and country‑risk intelligence are in place.
  • Provide guidance on pre‑travel requirements, travel restrictions, personal security, and emergency protocols; deliver security awareness initiatives (e.g., situational awareness, lone travel).
  • Maintain and support crisis and emergency management processes, including evacuation plans, traveler incident response, and escalation procedures.
  • Conduct people‑security assessments for offices, assets, and travel routes, identifying vulnerabilities and recommending mitigation measures.
  • Interface with Business Continuity, Crisis Management, and Physical/Cyber Security teams to ensure aligned preparedness and response.

Incident Management & Continuous Improvement

  • Support incident investigations of HSE and security-related incidents, ensuring root causes are identified and corrective actions implemented and verified.
  • Share lessons learned through structured safety communications and track HSE performance indicators to drive continuous improvement.
  • Support rollout of company HSE and Security programs, campaigns, and initiatives (e.g., LOTO, WHMIS, Working at Heights, Vehicle Safety, etc.).

  • Flexible : You are agile in your approach to your work and enjoy working within a lean team

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Management, Engineering, Risk/Security Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum 10 years of HSE experience, including 3+ years in governance/assurance or corporate HSSE Management Systems roles.
  • Proven experience managing or implementing ISO‑certified Management Systems (ISO 45001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001); experience with integrated systems is an asset.
  • Strong understanding of Canadian HSE legislation; experience across other jurisdictions in the Americas is a significant asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage corporate audits, legal compliance frameworks, and performance reporting.
  • Experience with people security and travel risk management (duty of care, journey management, crisis/evacuation planning, security awareness) is a strong asset.
  • Skilled communicator who can translate regulatory and technical requirements into practical, actionable strategies for a multinational organization.
  • Experience working in a matrixed environment with cross‑functional teams (e.g., operations, legal, ESG, quality).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 and governance/reporting tools.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Willingness to travel across the Americas to conduct HSSE audits and verifications (frequency varies by portfolio needs).

Pay Range:

$88,800.00 - $111,000.00
