Based in Poneke this role offers great variety to your day, where you could be working on internal or external communications plans, supporting the manager by leading and mentoring this small, energetic team and delivering our messaging including writing speeches for our Chief Executive and Minister.

Te Puni Kokiri is the government's principal policy advisor on M ori wellbeing and development. We achieve strategic influence with a focus on providing high quality policy advice and holding other agencies to account for delivering public services to, for, and with M ori. This includes our mandate to promote M ori achievement in education, training, health and economic resource development along with performing our monitoring and mentoring roles.

Te whai w hitanga | The opportunity

A core focus of the Team Leader is to manage and guide a small team of communications professionals and prioritise communications efforts in line with Te Puni Kokiri and Minister priorities. They take a business partnering, manaakitanga approach to their mahi.

This is a broad and varied position that focuses on:

  • Leadership. Act as the "go to" between business partner and specialist skills within the team. Support the manager in actively training Senior Advisors and Advisors.
  • Communications Expertise. As a subject matter expert, driving our communications strategy and providing timely advice to Executive Leadership and the Chief Executive to ensure key stakeholder messaging aligns with our objectives.
  • Ministerial Support. Lead the provision of high quality and timely speech writing services to the Minister and provide talking points for Minister's briefings.
  • Brand Promotion. Provide expert advice to the team to ensure high quality communication outputs, both internally and externally. Including effective use of print media, media services and using social media and digital channels appropriately and effectively.
  • Risk Management. Ensure significant communication risks are brought to the attention of the business partner and manager in a timely manner.
  • Media and Stakeholder engagement. Lead and foster our relationships with the media, particularly the M ori media and external stakeholders (including iwi and public sector communications leaders) to support achievement of Te Puni Kokiri kaupapa.

The Team Leader, as required, will provide advice and expertise to a range of different project based mahi. This includes our upcoming Hunuku Whare (relocation) and IT systems change projects.

The appointment range for this role is between $123,009 and $150,344 (With a midpoint of $136,676) per annum and the salary will be determined based on the successful candidate's skills and experience.

Mou | About you

This is a broad and varied communications position, with leadership responsibilities and we are looking for someone with the energy, personality, skills and accuracy to match. You should:

  • Have experience as a leader in a communications or similar position and can show significant experience working in the public service.
  • Be a subject matter expert who can confidently explain digital, print and other communication mediums to Executive Leadership.
  • Keep up with the evolving communications landscape, particularly with the swift advancements in technology and changing procedures.
  • Are committed to continuous learning.
  • Possess excellent oral and written skills with experience in speech writing, and have skills in editorial design.
  • Proven experience managing complex and multiple relationships to take full advantage of the perspectives and expertise of stakeholders.
  • Have some experience of working with the M ori media. Some fluency in te reo M ori is ideal.
  • Experience of working with iwi, hapu, wh nau, M ori organisations and M ori communities. Being comfortable in situations where tikanga is observed.
