Job Responsibilities

This position is located at the SC Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) - Office of Mental Health, Charleston Dorchester Mental Health Center, Al Cannon Detention Center 3841 Leeds Ave, Charleston, SC 29405.

The Office of Mental Health’s mission is to support the recovery of people with mental illnesses. We provide a complete array of medical and support services for children, adults, and families throughout South Carolina.

As the Mental Health Professional, working under general supervision, you will provide pre-screening-assessment services, case management, psycho-educational and preventive mental health services and crisis management interventions for residents at Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center (SACDC).


Responsibilities for the
Mental Health Professional:

  • Provide quality person centered care as demonstrated by the use of evidenced-based clinical interventions when conducting assessment services, follow up care and psycho-educational services.
  • Perform in an efficient manner and as credentialed by the OMH/SACDC as evidenced by meeting the established productivity expectation of resident assessment and screenings and case management services.
  • Demonstrate recognition of the importance of collaboration and teamwork within the SACDC, OMH and with community partners. Share necessary and appropriate treatment information with other medical providers at the jail and other agencies working on behalf of the residents, as appropriate.
  • Retain overall responsibility for meeting QA standards for the SACDC and OMH/CDMHC.
  • Complies with all OMH/CDMHC Corporate Compliance, Culture Competency policy and procedures and Federal State rules and regulations and attends all trainings classified mandatory by Federal and State regulations and Center policy.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • A master's degree in guidance, counseling, the social sciences or a related field.
Additional Requirements
  • In order to be credentialed for core services as a Mental Health Professional at the SC Office of Mental Health, applicants must provide evidence of clinical experience providing direct patient care. This experience may be documented as a practicum or internship during graduate program, or post-graduate clinical experience. Please be sure to provide specific clinical activities on your application and/or resume.
  • This position is considered essential and may require reporting for duty in the event of weather or similar emergency events.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree from an accredited program, university, or college in psychology, social work, counseling, marriage and family counseling or other behavioral discipline deemed equivalent by OMH.

Additional Comments

Post hire, employee must:

  • Have working knowledge of Mental Health legal principles and practices, of methods, principles and practices of clinical counseling and educational services.

  • Have considerable knowledge of psychopathology and patient management in psychiatric setting.

  • Have working knowledge of basic health and welfare services provided by other agencies.

  • Be able to effectively plan, coordinate and manage complex treatment and to the ability to conduct detailed investigations, draw conclusions and recommend required actions.
