Microbiology Laboratory Technician

To be able to perform general/technical work functions associated with operating a water quality laboratory and to ensure a continuous, adequate supply of drinking water meeting federal and state regulations.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

· Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. A relevant Bachelor of Science degree (biology, microbiology, environmental science, etc.) is preferred.

· Laboratory experience required.

· Must have in-depth knowledge of surface water treatment processes and equipment used in the facility.

· Previous operations experience in the water and/or wastewater industries preferred.

· Ability to relate well to employees at all levels, customers, and communities. Proficiency in Microsoft Office required.

Microbiology Lab Activities:

· Ensure all lab analysts are qualified in accordance with EPA standards (EPA V-1). This includes maintaining personal records of all laboratory analysts (academic background, transcripts, training courses, certifications, proficiency testing).

· Routinely update and oversee implementation of the written and approved quality control program in accordance with EPA requirements. Maintenance of written Quality Control (QC) records required by the state for inspection.

· Routinely update and oversee implementation of the written and approved quality assurance program in accordance with EPA requirements. Maintenance of written Quality Assurance (QA) records required by the state for inspection.

Algae Lab:

· Collect and store algae samples according to correct holding procedures. Implement chain of custody documents as needed.

· Routinely update and implement SOPs following EPA Methods 544 and 546 for cyanotoxin analysis. This includes Piedmont Water’s own QA and QC measures.

· Complete Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) proficiency testing for drinking water and surface water samples. (Offered biannually by Gold Standard Diagnostic.)

Chemistry Lab

• Coordinate weekly THM sampling schedule. Ensure all samples meet EPA standards for THM analysis.
• Proficiently operate the THM Analyzer (an automated gas chromatography apparatus) for analysis of water samples.
• Submit results to appropriate parties in a timely manner. Maintain a database of all records and results.

General Duties:

A. Assist with all other special tasks and projects as directed by management.

B. This job is considered emergency essential and will be required to report to work during inclement weather or when an emergency arises.

C. Will be required to adhere to the use of appropriate personal protective equipment related to plant operation and maintenance.

D. Ability to work night, day, weekends, and/or holidays.E. Perform related shift duties as needed.
