Mine Technician - Regulatory Compliance
PURPOSE
CST Canada Coal Limited (CST Coal) is seeking an Entry-Level Mine Technician to join our Resource Management Team. The incumbent is responsible for performing field assessments, data collection, and data analysis while ensuring these deliverables satisfy project deadlines. This position requires the incumbent to liaise with various departments, stakeholders, and consultants to ensure inspections and field data collection are complete and in compliance with the Coal Conservation Act (CCA) and the Public Lands Act (PLA).
ACCOUNTABILITY
The Mine Technician reports to the Regulatory Coordinator, who is responsible for mentoring, supervising, and adjusting the incumbents work plan and responsibilities.
RESPONSIBILITIES & PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
The Mine Technician will be responsible for completing a designated number of hours in both office and field components. The Technicians work plan will specify the timelines required for all tasks, however the work plan is subject to change as mining plans change. The work plan may include the following responsibilities:
  • Participate in and follow all CST policies, Standard Operating Procedures, and Safe Work Practices. Ensure that the safety standard procedures are strictly adhered to with the goal of achieving zero workplace incidents and promotion of a safe work environment for all.
  • Weekly attendance in team meetings, daily attendance in toolbox meetings.
  • Routine visual performance monitoring of various mining and tailings pond structures.

Position Description
  • Deliver geotechnical measurements and data utilizing instruments such as: Slope Inclinometers and Vibrating Wire Piezometers. Calibrate and troubleshoot field instruments.
  • Perform quality control on geotechnical instrumentation data. Ensure submission and presentation of data for reporting is completed on time.
  • Prepare regulatory documents for submission.
  • Liaise with and accommodate various technical consultants at our mine site.
  • Capable of performing fieldwork and operating motor vehicles and ATV’s in all weather conditions.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education
  • A two-year technical diploma in geoscience or civil engineering or equivalent.
Experience
  • The Mine Technician is an entry-level position with a great opportunity to gain experience in many different mining and regulatory disciplines, including geotechnical monitoring systems, instrumentation, and report writing. No prior industry experience is necessary; however, it is considered an asset. Ongoing training and feedback will be provided to help you be successful.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Safety attitude and personal commitment to a zero incident work place
  • Excellent verbal & written communication, interpersonal and administrative skills.
  • Proficient with MS Suite products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Proven ability to prioritize effectively, multitask, and manage time and tasks efficiently.
  • Excellent work ethic and accountable team member. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to be adaptable, positive attitude and professional approach with the willingness to learn.
  • Must be willing to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The incumbent needs to be able to:
  • Handle loads up to 20 kg. in weight
  • Maintain a license to operate a vehicle requiring a Class 5 license
  • Engage in physical exertion, i.e., walking and climbing over rough and uneven terrain in all types of weather
  • Perceive fine visual detail

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position will be on an EDO schedule where the individual will work 9-hour days, and receive every second Friday off to help facilitate work/life balance. This position includes both office and fieldwork.

Housing - Please be advised there are no camp facilities available. All employees who are based at the mine site will qualify for the Living Out Allowance Benefit OR can choose to use company provided housing if available.
As a condition of employment, the incumbent is required to comply with pre and post-employment drug and alcohol testing as per the Drug and Alcohol Policy. Personal protective equipment will include the use of an approved hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe boots, hearing protection, protective clothing and gloves, and safety vest.
