Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world. In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in steelmaking coal and manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in North West Queensland and Western Australia.


Job Description
-As the Outbye Superintendent, you will be responsible for overseeing all Outbye operations, ensuring the safety, compliance, and productivity of the Outbye workforce. This role is key to maintaining the support infrastructure and logistics that allow the mining team to work effectively and meet production targets. The ideal candidate is a seasoned mining professional with a deep understanding of coal mining operations, safety regulations, and experience managing teams in an underground mining environment.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, your typical duties include, but not limited to the following:

  • Accountable for all Outbye operations, including though not limited to; mine services, roadways, conveyors, secondary support, and general infrastructure maintenance.
  • Ensure all operations are conducted in strict adherence with Qld Coal Mining Safety & Health Act, Regulations, other legal and corporate requirements.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other departments, such as production, engineering, and safety teams, to achieve organizational goals.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve operational issues, minimizing downtime and ensuring continuity in coal production.
  • Lead, mentor, and support team members, fostering a culture of safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement that underpin the success of Aquila mine.
  • Prepare reports on performance metrics, safety incidents, and other relevant data for senior management.
  • Actively participate in the development of the Life of Mine planning, working closely with the commercial department to ensure costs are managed with the budget guidelines.

Qualifications
-To be successful in this role you will have the following:

  • Previous experience in a similar position within an underground mining operation.
  • A detailed understanding of the coal mining processes and knowledge of relevant mining legislation and its application.
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills to influence and achieve buy in from key stakeholders.
  • A high level of strategic thinking, planning and problem-solving ability.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety with previous experience in identifying risks and implementing safe working practices.

  • -Full-time permanent position based at Aquila Mine, Middlemount QLD
  • Monday to Friday site role with 9-day fortnight available
