Job description

This internship focuses on using advanced full-field measurement techniques to monitor both
material deformation and crack growth on test specimens, with the goal of building a reliable
testing database for characterization of ductile fracture. A key aspect of the project is quantifying uncertainties, particularly those caused by measurement noise. During this internship you will :

  • Perform full-field measurements on test specimens using with Digital Image Correlation (DIC) to capture real-time, high-resolution data on both deformation and crack propagation across the entire surface of the specimen ;
  • Extract displacements maps across the specimen surface to derivate strain maps and crack growth ;
  • Focus on managing uncertainties in the data. You will learn techniques to reduce the influence of measurement noise, ensuring the resulting database is as reliable and accurate as possible. This will include understanding the sources of noise, such as equipment limitations, and how to mitigate them ;
  • Work with data processing tools to filter, refine, and validate the experimental data, ensuring that the final database reflects the true behavior of the material.
This internship is a spin-off of the ESCALE project which aims to build a software sharepoint
for material testing based on full field measurements.
Note that a PhD thesis on an material characterization based on the produced data is scheduled as a continuation of this internship.

General information

Organisation

The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) is a key player in research, development and innovation in four main areas :
  • defence and security,
  • nuclear energy (fission and fusion),
  • technological research for industry,
  • fundamental research in the physical sciences and life sciences.

Drawing on its widely acknowledged expertise, and thanks to its 16000 technicians, engineers, researchers and staff, the CEA actively participates in collaborative projects with a large number of academic and industrial partners.

The CEA is established in ten centers spread throughout France
