Job Introduction

BBC News is one of the world’s most watched news channels, bringing breaking news and analysis to millions of viewers in the UK and around the world.

The BBC’s Singapore bureau leads coverage for multiple hours every day, reporting the most important stories both across Britain and globe, as well as covering the day’s biggest breaking news. We’re investing in the team that makes that happen.

Successful candidates will play an integral part in a multinational team that is redefining and reimagining the relationship between digital and linear news both on air and online.

We are looking for a talented and experienced journalist to be the News Editor, leading live and breaking news coverage for the BBC News channel. You will produce several hours of output, overseeing a team of Senior Journalists, Journalists and Presenters.

Main Responsibilities

You will understand the power of visual storytelling both on air and online, and the importance of transparency in every aspect of our journalism as an integral part of news verification and authenticity. You must thrive under pressure and be able to deliver news as it happens without sacrificing quality or journalistic integrity.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead comprehensive coverage of global events. You will be making the key editorial and creative decisions on news coverage, making full use of the breadth of the BBC newsroom and its resources around the world. You will also play a part in steering the development of the output across social media and digital platforms.

You will oversee the Channel’s Singapore staff; responsible for building team spirit, setting objectives and establishing clear expectations about required performance levels. You will address performance issues promptly and fairly, treating team members with respect. The Singapore bureau is also home to digital and news content teams and you’ll be a key senior figure within it, liaising with other leaders and helping to drive BBC News’ “Follow The Sun” strategy of expanding output around the clock.

We are looking for an inspiring leader who has commitment, motivation and a passion for reporting the news.

This is a newsroom-based role.

Are you the right candidate?

The successful candidate must have:

  • A high standard of editorial judgment, writing ability and production skills based on substantial broadcast journalism experience.
  • A track record of covering the UK and international news agenda in live and breaking television news coverage, so you can work swiftly and make decisions under pressure on big global and UK stories
  • Experience of commissioning stories with great potential for compelling television
  • A detailed understanding of current techniques and technology for newsgathering and production – including proven experience in digital news reporting.
  • An ability to use new technologies to create opportunities to enhance output and improve working practices
  • A willingness to work flexibly, being present to drive live output across different shifts and during unsociable hours
  • The ability to thrive under pressure while meeting deadlines and changing priorities
  • Experience of leading a team of journalists in both news coverage and personal development and the ability to work productively with different teams across departments and/or regions
  • Awareness of wider news strategy, its implications for BBC News’ key priorities (diversity, reaching new audiences, multi-skilling and health and safety) and the ability to put it into practice
  • Able to demonstrate a commitment to improving diversity in the BBC and understands how individual differences can benefit the BBC
  • Excellent editorial judgement and a proven understanding of the BBC’s editorial values
