Location Profile

1. Host School

The host school for the Shepparton English Language Centre (SELC) since 2008 to the current time is St Georges Road Primary School in the south of Shepparton. The School Principal has the overall responsibility of the school, including the Shepparton English Language Centre, which will operate as a sub-school of the host school.

The Shepparton English Language Centre is located in the northwest corner of the St Georges Road Primary School site in a discrete building formerly used by the Shepparton Schools¿ Support Centre (corner of Hayes and Weddell Streets) and two relocatable buildings. The complex of buildings is Campus 2 of St Georges Road Primary School.

2. Shepparton English Language Centre

The Shepparton English Language Centre (SELC) is responsible for providing EAL (English as an Additional Language) Intensive English Tuition to New Arrivals students in primary and secondary government schools in the Shepparton Schools District.

In addition to Intensive English Tuition, students are taught some specialist subjects such as Mathematics, Physical Education, Art, Music, Science and/or Aussie Skills.

The overall target number for SELC is 65 students each year. Historically the number of students fluctuates with the lowest enrolment in any one year being 52 and the highest, 172 students.

New Arrival Primary and Secondary students from the Shepparton network of schools will attend the Centre full time for a period of 6 - 12 months depending on their visa and ability.

The Shepparton English Language Centre also provides an EAL Cluster Program to provide support to local EAL students who have been in Australia between one and five years in outlying schools who do not have sufficient numbers of students to be able to employ their own staff. The objective of the EAL Cluster Program is to provide curriculum, planning, reporting and assessment advice and guidance to teachers of EAL students, to improve the understanding and knowledge of EAL student learning needs by the school community, including leadership, classroom teachers and other staff.

St Georges Road PS as the host school will employ staff on a contract basis, with the possibility of secondment and right of return provisions for ongoing staff in government schools.

3. Proviso for Lower Student Numbers

If student numbers enrolled reduce at any period during the year the expertise of staff might need be reallocated to woring in a part- or full-time capacity in mainstream schools.

4. Overarching School Goals

1) Intensive English language tuition for newly arrived students.

2) Provide a nurturing, caring and safe learning environment for students to settle into their new country and develop a sense of belonging and connectedness.

3) Through English acquisition teach children a general knowledge of Australia and an understanding of the culture.

Selection Criteria

1. A minimum qualification of Certificate III in Education Support.

2. Proficiency in four languages; English, Dari/Hazaragi, Hindi & Urdu.

3. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

4. Excellent organizational and time management abilities

5. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

6. Completed and passed Further and Advanced Mathematics at VCE Year 12 level.

7. Have had experience working with both primary and secondary aged students.

8. Experience working with diverse cultural backgrounds

Responsibilities

Administrative and Operational Support

  • General Administration:
    • Undertake general office duties, such as filing, photocopying, and data entry.
  • Facilities Management:
    • Coordinate building and grounds maintenance, including repairs, improvments and renovations.
    • Manage and purchase furniture.
    • Create grounds plans for the Language Centre and host school in liason with the leadership of the host school.
  • Logistics and Planning:
    • Organize and supervise student transportation, including bus usage.
    • Assist with the planning and implementation of school events and activities.
  • Inter-Organisational Liaison:
    • Act as a liaison between the Language Centre and host school.
    • Support the Language Centre Co-ordinator.
  • Safety and Compliance:
    • Oversee safety protocols and conduct OH&S inductions.
    • Work with the OH&S Co-ordinator of the host school.
  • Technology and Training:
    • Operate and train others in routine use of office equipment and computer systems.

Student Welfare and Support

  • Student Onboarding:
    • Welcome and orientate new students and their families.
    • Facilitate student enrolments, including interviewing families, paperwork and data entry.
    • Act as a resource to develop staff knowledge of the students¿ backgrounds and the issues they face.
  • Student Well-being:
    • Provide guidance and support to students with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges.
    • Collaborate with external agencies to address student needs.
  • Family Engagement:
    • Facilitate communication between students, teachers, and parents.
    • Assist students and their families with transition between educational settings.
    • Help to involve parents in school activities and programs.
  • Community Engagement:
    • Assists school personnel in promotion of multicultural events and activities in allocated schools to raise awareness and celebrate diversity and cultural differences.
    • Attend meetings locally, regionally and state-wide as requested by the allocated schools as directed.

Classroom Support and Instruction

  • Direct Student Support:
    • Assist teachers in the classroom, translating instructions and clarifying concepts.
    • Provide individualized and small-group support to students with varying English language proficiency levels.
  • Curriculum Support:
    • Assist in the preparation and delivery of EAL teaching materials and resources.
    • Accompany teachers and students on educational excursions.
    • Support the Mathematics teacher in teaching from primary to secondary levels.
    • Assisting with the preparation of EAL teaching aids/resources to support curriculum delivery.
