Job Description


We are seeking a dynamic Operations Manager to lead our Medical Device team at our Ballytivnan Site in Co. Sligo.

This role is crucial in ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant manufacturing operations. The ideal candidate will apply their extensive expertise and leadership skills to drive operational excellence and foster team development.

AbbVie's Ballytivnan site is a hub of innovation and excellence in the pharmaceutical industry located in the scenic County Sligo, Ireland. Our sophisticated facility is dedicated to producing high-quality Medical Devices and biologics that are essential in improving health outcomes and transforming patient lives globally.

The Role:

The Operations Manager is responsible for the safe and compliant manufacturing of medical devices using a range of processes, including manual and electric component assembly, injection moulding, pad printing, automated assembly, and other technologies introduced to the site.

This role leads the Operations function, ensuring alignment with safety, regulatory, and operational requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement all relevant policies and procedures for Manufacturing, Engineering, Personnel, Quality, and Safety.
  • Apply industry best practices and the latest regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure the plant meets customer service, financial, quality, safety, and inventory management goals through effective resource management.
  • Meet agreed volume and mix goals to satisfy customer requirements.
  • Develop and implement projects for new product introduction and continuous improvement.
  • Develop the skills and capabilities of the operations team.
  • Support successful external and internal audits.
  • Manage approved budgets and cash flow within targets.
  • Ensure safety standards and safe working practices are maintained.
  • Collaborate with SCM, Engineering, and Quality functions to implement operational plans.
  • Provide technical expertise for commercial manufacturing during new product development, managing timelines and resources.
  • Identify and drive continuous improvement projects.
  • Prepare capital and expense budgets for assigned projects.
  • Manage Medical Device operations budgets.
  • Lead Operations management team meetings and develop site and department goals and strategies.


Qualifications

  • Essential: Relevant third-level degree in engineering, science, or related discipline.
  • Desired: Master’s degree strongly preferred.

Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in the medical device industry, with at least 7 years in manufacturing or technical support.
  • Detailed knowledge of cGMP requirements for medical devices.
  • 7+ years direct management experience.
  • 7+ years significant operational experience.
  • Proven track record of operational contributions and accomplishments.
  • Significant contributions to product or process development/improvement.
  • Strong technical knowledge and application of concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Experience in healthcare, medical devices, or similar industries preferred.

Cognitive & Leadership Skills

  • Demonstrated competency with financial systems and fiscal control.
  • Strategic mindset and enterprise leadership to drive departmental efficiency.
  • Ability to contribute to site leadership as part of the Site Leadership Team.
  • Ability to influence cross-functionally and support cost improvement projects.
  • Strong collaborative skills with internal and external stakeholders.
