Join Our Mission to Advance Trusted Quantum Communication

At Quantum Technology Laboratories GmbH (qtlabs), we are developing next-generation quantum communication technologies for space and terrestrial applications. Our work combines quantum optics, cryptography, and advanced engineering to create practical systems for secure communication in the quantum era.

Based in Vienna, our team brings together experts in quantum key distribution (QKD), optical communication, system engineering, and security-critical technologies. We are now looking for an Expert for secure implementation of QKD Systems to strengthen our expertise in the secure implementation, validation, and certification readiness of QKD devices and networks.

Quantum Technology Laboratories GmbH is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.

About the Role

Join us in building the next generation of secure quantum communication systems—for space and beyond. As an Optical Systems Development Engineer, you will develop high-performance optical systems for cutting-edge Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) applications.

You will take ownership of optical setups throughout the complete development lifecycle—from early breadboard experiments and performance simulations to compact micro-optical implementations and integrated hardware. Working in a multidisciplinary team of physicists and engineers, you will independently plan, procure, assemble, align, and validate optical systems.

This role combines hands-on laboratory work with optical system engineering and cross-functional product integration. It is ideal for someone who enjoys translating optical concepts into robust, manufacturable systems and is comfortable taking responsibility throughout the development process.

What You’ll Do
  • Develop optical and fiber-optical systems from initial concepts and breadboard setups to compact micro-optical implementations.
  • Define optical system architectures, requirements, interfaces, performance budgets, and verification concepts.
  • Estimate and optimize system performance using optical simulations, analytical models, and numerical tools such as Zemax OpticStudio, MATLAB, Python, or equivalent software.
  • Perform tolerance, sensitivity, and error-budget analyses to assess the impact of manufacturing, alignment, thermal, and mechanical effects.
  • Assemble micro-optical systems using appropriate cleaning, handling, alignment, bonding, and curing processes.
  • Carry out active and passive alignment of bulk-optical, micro-optical, and fiber-optical components.
  • Take ownership of Manufacturing, Assembly, Integration, and Test (MAIT) activities for optical systems—from prototype assembly to the implementation of reliable and reproducible manufacturing processes.
  • Support the interdisciplinary integration of optical systems with optoelectronics, electronics, optomechanics, thermal and mechanical design, embedded systems, and software.
What You Bring

We are looking for candidates with hands-on experience in optical system development and strengths in several of the areas listed below. We do not expect applicants to have experience in every area.

  • A degree in Physics, Optics, Photonics, Optical Engineering, or a related technical field—or equivalent practical experience in optical system development.
  • Strong hands-on experience in independently setting up, aligning, and characterizing optical experiments.
  • Practical experience with bulk-optical, micro-optical, and fiber-optical systems.
  • Experience in handling, cleaning, aligning, and adhesively bonding sensitive optical components.
  • Knowledge of optical simulation and system-analysis methods, ideally using Zemax OpticStudio, MATLAB, Python, or comparable tools.
  • Experience in translating system requirements into optical designs, performance budgets, and test concepts.
  • A structured and independent working style, with the ability to take ownership of complex development activities from planning through implementation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills combined with a practical, hands-on mindset.
  • The ability to communicate and coordinate effectively across different engineering disciplines.
  • Good technical documentation and reporting skills.
  • Professional proficiency in English.

Nice to Have

  • Experience developing optical systems for space applications.
  • Familiarity with space-industry development processes, qualification approaches, or ECSS standards.
  • Experience with micro-optical assemblies designed for harsh environments, including vibration, shock, temperature cycling, or vacuum conditions.
  • Knowledge of optical adhesives, bonding processes, contamination control, and precision assembly techniques.
  • Practical experience with Manufacturing, Assembly, Integration, and Test processes.
  • Experience transitioning optical prototypes into reproducible and manufacturable products.
  • Familiarity with the supplier landscape for micro-optical, bulk-optical, fiber-optical, and optomechanical components.
  • Experience in supplier selection, technical procurement, and coordination with specialized manufacturing partners.
  • Knowledge of quantum optics, laser systems, single-photon technologies, or Quantum Key Distribution.
  • Experience supporting interdisciplinary product-integration activities.
Why Join Us?

You will work at the intersection of quantum technology, optical engineering, and space systems, turning advanced optical concepts into real-world hardware. You will have substantial technical ownership and the opportunity to shape optical systems from early development through integration and qualification.

We welcome applications from all qualified candidates. Applicants available to join us in the near term are particularly encouraged to apply.

The minimum gross salary for this position is €3.157,47 per month (based on full-time employment) in accordance with the collective agreement. However, there is a willingness to offer a higher salary depending on experience and qualifications.

Quantum Technology Laboratories GmbH is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.

We look forward to receiving your application!
