About the Role

There is an exciting opportunity for a senior Paediatric Registrar to join Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Te Mata a Māui Hawke’s Bay in a full-time position. Applications are invited for the position of Paediatric Fellow for next year commencing in February 2026. This post is recognised as a Senior Medical Officer (SMO) post and is the ideal post to prepare the trainee for consultant life!

About the Team/Service/ Location

Hawke’s Bay Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital is a 400-bed hospital providing acute and elective care for the Hawke's Bay region. We have most major medical and surgical subspecialties on site (except cardiothoracic and neurosurgery), as well as paediatrics and O&G. We are well supported by a strong regional ICU team. We have strengthening Primary and Community health services and an increasingly integrated approach to health and health care, with a dedication to reducing inequity.

The Paediatric Department offer supportive working conditions and are committed to excellent teaching. The department includes a 16-bed General Paediatric ward and 4-bed Paediatric Assessment Unit, Out-patient clinics on a number of sites, a 12-cot level 2A SCBU, and a Child Development Service. Clinical work is varied and challenging.

The department includes consultants dedicated to neurobehavioral work, and others in busy leadership positions. The SMO roster is a nine-week rotating roster, with weekends 1:9 and designated weeks covering either the general ward rounds or the SCBU war rounds. The Fellow is part of this roster but always has a designated back-up SMO for support.

The Fellow will do an average of 14 outpatient clinics in a 9-week cycle, including New Patients and Follow-ups. There are opportunities to get experience in rural outreach clinics (Wairoa, Waipukurau) and other specialty clinics (e.g. Diabetes CF, neurobehavioral) depending on interest and training requirements. There is flexibility and the training programme can be tailored to suit.

At RMO level there are five Paediatric Registrars and five House Officers, working as a team. The 10 RMO’s share a combined roster, covering all acute areas including the Children’s Ward, Level 2A Special Care Baby Unit and Delivery Suite.

Experience and Eligibility

Suitable for Resident Medical Officers in their final years of Advanced Training with the RACP.
