Nature of Work
Parks-Kanawha State Forest Under the direction of the State Forest Superintendent, employee will carry out the efficient, comprehensive, and responsible execution of management responsibilities at Kanawha State Forest, a state-operated facility, as the Assistant Superintendent. Employee will assist in the responsibilities of safety, cleanliness, security, maintenance, law enforcement, and forest fire suppression within forest boundaries. Employee must have good public relations abilities in working with forest guests to resolve any problems or difficulties. Must help maintain and promote good relations between the forest and the public. In conjunction with the Superintendent, will act in a proactive hands-on capacity when needed, make work assignments, and follow up to ensure task completion of subordinates. Employee will perform maintenance when necessary, due to staff limitations. Assists with the annual budget requests and ensures that all administrative details are attended to including the preparation of purchasing documents, required monthly reports, inventories, ledgers, correspondence, etc. Employee is responsible for rental of campsites and picnic shelters, and that all funds are deposited into State Forest bank accounts. Employee must have the ability and personnel skills to work with other agencies. Employee will have management responsibilities at the forest including DNR's Wildlife Resources Section and the Division of Forestry. Must also attend meetings and work with the active Kanawha State Forest Foundation. Employee must have certification or attend training and become a certified operator to perform work related to water and wastewater treatment. Employee will interact with and assist with the supervision, operation, maintenance, and protection of all, or part of the following facilities on the 9,052 acres of Kanawha State Forest including a 46-site campground with two bathhouses, multiple picnic areas with rentable picnic shelters, playgrounds, and hiking/mountain biking trails. Employee may be required to successfully complete required Special Natural Resources Police Officer training and pistol qualification requirements as established by DNR Law Enforcement Section. SNRPO trainees will be required to pass a one-time background investigation, pre-employment polygraph examination, psychiatric evaluation, and physical examination. Employee is required to live on-site in the Superintendent residence provided. Must be licensed or eligible to operate a motor vehicle in WV. Employee is required to wear assigned Superintendent uniforms. Regular attendance is a requirement of this position. Employee performs all related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications
Special Requirement: Must have a valid driver’s license. May need to successfully complete required Special Natural Resources Police Officer training and pistol requirements as established by the Division of Natural Resources, Law Enforcement Section. May need to pass periodic firearms qualification. May need to pass an initial physical examination, psychological evaluation and a polygraph examination designed to determine applicant’s fitness for Special Natural Resources Police Officer enforcement duties.

Other Information
Probationary Period 1 year per SPB 2851 effective 06/27/2019.
Pay Differentials:
- Park Superintendents who serve as Defensive Tactics Training Instructors in the Special Natural Resources Police Officer Program will receive a shift differential of $100 per month effective February 1, 2014 (SPB 2647).
- Park Superintendents who are not provided an on-park residence will receive a stipend of $1,000 per month in lieu of housing effective June 1, 2012 (SPB 2601).
