TKS Nashville School Coach - Job Description
This highly rewarding position requires no prior chess knowledge.
You do need to be willing to learn.
I have elite chess players with whom you will be partnered while you improve at chess. I need you to help manage classrooms, supervise and safeguard kids, and have fun.
Retired Teachers, Not-retired teachers, Education Majors, After-Care Workers, Summer Camp Workers and Counselors, Sports Coaches... right up your alley.
You will improve at chess. You'll have the basics down in no time.
"But I don't think I can learn to play chess..."
We teach Preschoolers to play. If you're literally unable to learn the rules of a game we teach 4 year-olds, then no... you should not apply.
Otherwise, if you're reliable, professional, friendly, engaging, and enjoy working with kids, then you should. This job is awesome.
And with a little effort you'll learn to play chess quite well. You're unlikely to become a Chess Grand Master, but who knows...
I'm unlikely to join the PGA tour but that doesn't keep me from having fun on the golf course.
As a Knight School Chess Coach, you will work with The Knight School’s proprietary teaching curriculum to provide developmentally targeted chess instruction to children from Pre-K, all the way up to middle school. This position is typically part-time with an average of 6-15 hours a week (or, 3 hours per class taught), although the weekly hours may vary depending on The Knight School Nashville's need and the selected candidate’s availability.
Qualifications
The person selected as School Coach must possess the following skills and abilities:
- The ability to pass the TKS background check and any school-required background check; the safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority.
- High school degree or equivalent and some amount of college study; in progress collegiate study is fine.
- Reliable transportation to cover multiple classes at multiple locations within a week.
- Positive, encouraging, confident personality, balanced with the ability to maintain a structured and disciplined classroom.
Physical Requirements
The Physical Requirements of this position are such that the selected candidate must be able to:
- Lift up to 25 pounds
Position Responsibilities
As a School Coach for The Knight School Nashville, you will be trusted with the following responsibilities, in addition to any specific instructions provided by The Knight School Nashville City Coach:
Foster and maintain a safe and well-managed environment for children. The safety of the children in our care is our priority, first, foremost, and above all.
Promote and encourage good sportsmanship and character. Create a positive and respectful environment where kids grow as people while they improve as chess players.
Have fun! Laugh! Smile! Lead a high-energy, engaging, and super-fun class that kids will absolutely love coming to week after week.
Nurture and safeguard The Knight School's relationship with host schools. Display absolute professionalism, a positive attitude, and leave classrooms and facilities better than we found them.
Maintain the schedule with which the City Coach provides you, arriving at assigned locations for set-up at least 30 minutes before the official class start time and remaining at the location until all students are delivered to parents (or after school care providers).
Set up and run a video lesson produced by Dr. David Brooks, and supervise in-class student tournaments, focusing on the chess tactic taught that week.
Commit to the full academic year, running approximately mid-August through May. Summer hours available June through early-August if desired.
Travel to the assigned location, and plan travel times to account for slower transportation times through school zones and rush-hour traffic.
