We are now looking for a Patent Engineer to join IPR team in the Digital Technologies business area.

As a patent engineer, you have a key role in evaluating and protecting VTT inventions and patent prosecution in close co-operation with the researchers, patent offices and business development experts. In this position, you have the opportunity to grow into a key member of the IPR team, which in turn enables VTT inventions to be turned into significant innovations.

In the Digital Technologies business area, the technology areas you would be working with include optical measurements, printable and flexible electronics (sensors and devices) and materials, photonic biosensors, health technology (including human sensing and wearables).

Our team of IPR professionals manage VTT’s IPR portfolio to enhance technology commercialization. We operate as part of VTT’s Business Development function. We work in close operation with VTT’s research areas, business development, LaunchPad spinoff incubator, the commercial operations and the legal unit. Our main tasks include managing VTT’s patent and IPR license portfolios as well as in general turning VTT’s research-based inventions from brilliant ideas to a complete technology transfer packages for VTT’s customers and spinoffs.

Your location can be any one of VTT’s sites: Espoo, Tampere, Oulu or Jyväskylä.

As Patent Engineer, you will be:

• Evaluating the patentability of inventions and managing the invention process
• Prosecuting patents in co-operation with the inventors and external patent attorneys
• Managing the patent portfolio together with IPR managers
• Running patent teams in the research area to ensure effective patenting decisions and optimal protection scope in your area
• Supporting IP based value creation and business development.

Who we are looking for:

• You have strong experience in invention evaluation and patent prosecution, along with a solid technical background in the field of digital technologies.
• You hold at least a master’s degree in a relevant field of science or engineering.
• You are motivated to learn about new and emerging technologies and enjoy learning by doing.
• You have a proven ability of preparing cases to patent decision boards, and strong communication skills for effective collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders.
• You are proficient in both Finnish and English.

In addition, we value prior experience in managing patent portfolios and understanding of the European and US patent prosecution.
