Job Overview
The Peer Support Worker is responsible for delivering peer support and recovery services to peers or members of the community in clinical settings. These workers go out in the community to support peers as part of teams embedded at HSN. We currently have teams in two different units within the hospital, as well as consultants that work closely with HSN’s leaders. On a daily basis, workers may provide peer support one-to-one, prepare and deliver group-based programming, or attend meetings. As the front-line of NISA—and its face in the community—peer workers are also responsible for acting in accordance with the core values of peer support, of modelling recovery oriented and trauma informed practices, and for being respectful and professional in all they do.
Duties
- Provide one-to-one assistance and support to peers within clinical settings.
- Prepare and facilitate structured and unstructured mental health groups in clinical settings (where appropriate).
- Help peers navigate hospital programs and understand what to expect.
- Provide referral to appropriate services within the community.
- Assist peers in accessing and obtaining other community resources where needed.
- Help the Program Manager in creating programming plans and calendars.
- Work with Leadership and partners to adapt programming to the needs of service users.
- Assist peers in identifying their personal recovery goals and setting objectives to reach those goals.
- Recognize and respect recovery-based philosophy including individual’s right to self-determination and autonomy.
- Assist with and participate in regular team meetings.
- Advocate with and for peers to ensure adequate resources are available.
- Ensure peers have awareness and understanding of rights relating to services.
- Ensure individuals’ contacts are recorded appropriately and in a timely manner utilizing our internal database.
- Ensure that monthly, annual and other required reporting documentation are completed.
- Provide assistance to Programs Manager with community networking and additional outreach or educational tasks.
- Participate in regularly scheduled meetings with the Program Manager.
- Promote NISA’s mission, vision and values to the membership and to the community.
- Represent NISA in a professional manner.
- Maintain confidentiality of information and documents relevant to service users, personnel, and volunteers.
- Direct and assist in the daily maintenance of the space while on site, or ensure that work spaces are kept clean and tidy while working off-site.
- Complete other assigned tasks that may be necessary for the operations of NISA and the delivery of its programs.
Experience
- Have personal lived experience within the mental health system.
- A diploma, degree or Canadian equivalent in health or a related discipline (Social Service Work, Social Work, Psychology, Humanities, Social Sciences).
o A combination of education, work, and life experience may be considered equivalent.
- Familiar with the goals and objectives of NISA/Northern Initiative for Social Action.
- Have working knowledge of mental health service agencies, including consumer/survivor organizations in Ontario.
- Completion of Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP), Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), and other Peer Support training is strongly preferred.
- Completion of Standard First Aid with CPR, WHMIS, Workplace Accessibility and Prevention of Violence and Harassment in the Workplace Training is preferred.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Computer experience, including an ability to use Word, Excel, and email/internet technologies.
- Written and verbal proficiency in both official languages is considered an asset
